The Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch's annual Good Friday Open House will be held this Friday, April 18, at Beamer Memorial Conservation Area in Grimsby, ON from 10AM to 3PM, weather permitting. There is no rain date. Everyone is welcome. Voluntary admission fee. A highlight of the 2003 Open House will be the unveiling of new display signs, including one explaining the Raptor Migration over the Niagara Peninsula. Dave Copeland, who was instrumental in starting the hawkwatch at Beamer CA in 1974, designed the new Raptor panel. Other activities will include displays by nature groups and nature tour operators, explanations of the migration by Bruce Duncan, a children's program presented by Carla Carlson of Niagara Nature Tours, and a Hawk Identification workshop. Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch counters are stationed at Beamer CA from 8AM-4PM Standard Time every day from March 1 through May 15, except in very bad weather. An average of 14,500 birds of 15 species of hawks, eagles, falcons and vultures is counted each season. Turn right (west) on Ridge Rd. W., go 1.6km to Quarry Rd., then turn right again and go 100 yards. Parking is available inside the park, at the entrance and on Quarry and Ridge Roads.
