My thoughts have been that "recycling" boats would be a good thing. I know
that methods, materials, products, and markets have changed and Lord knows
that repairing and refurbishing a boat is not an easy nor cheap thing to
do, but.... there's a lot of older boats out there, they have some value
maybe, generally they don't wear out they rust out and discarding them is a
problem, and they could be recycled effectively if approached in the right
mind set.
Example: take an older sailboat, remove the rig, add some deck living
area enclosure, possibly remove , alter, or modify some of the keel and
rudder, add some fuel capacity, make a trawler
Could that concept not be as valid as designing the "perfect" BCCYU40 that
supports the same overhead system that exists? Isn't consumption one of
the problems with the economy now? If function dictates design there would
only be one style of boat. Everyone has a different opinion of what function
is and how it affects the overall experience.
You have essentially described the "Mischief," it has been cruising
now for over 30 years under multiple owners, engines, interiors and
now with a new engine, and the interior re-arranged to suite us, it
carries on just fine.

Very similar looking, and similar weights, although I like the
interior layout of ours much better, and the fact we cruise the same
mph on 1/2 the horsepower (@1 gph).
We also have a C-Dory 22, great boat to camp on.
