I am also looking at a trawler in the Galveston area. We heard from Rich Gano about transiting west from Pensacola to Mobile but what about east ? I would have to get to Mobile to also head up the Tombigbee to get this boat to Lake Michigan. Is it feasible given the oil spill to get to Mobile. We havent heard much up north about how this tragedy is affecting the recreation boating in the Gulf. I know it sounds trivial given the loses of many of those people in the area affected by this spill but I was just wondering if it is practical to get a boat across to Mobile Bay at this time.

Hello Captain Tom:

While I can't answer your specific question, we have established a special section of the Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net, dedicated to how the Gulf oil spill is impacting the cruising community. We have fellow cruisers reporting all up and down the Florida Panhandle and Alabama. Captain Marge is making almost daily reports, and, so far, the Gulf ICW is clear from Mobile Bay through the Panhandle. Of course, that could change in the future.

Anyway, to get the latest, go to:

Good luck and good cruising!
