MEDIA RELEASE
April 27, 2018

Peninsula high school art club teams up with local artist for “galloping gertie under the sea”

Christine Buchanan Donates Hand-Made Octopus to Enhance Museum Exhibit

Gig Harbor, WA – Harbor History Museum is excited to announce the addition of some new “friends” to our Lobby. Christine Buchanan’s ceramic octopus and student-created jellyfish were crafted as a part of a lesson for the Peninsula High School Art Club.

Along with the donation of Buchanan’s ceramic octopus, members of the Peninsula High School Art Club made five beautifully crafted, fused-glass jellyfish sculptures. The students’ jellyfish and Buchanan’s octopus will find a home with the twisted metal pieces that were found in the Narrows after the 1940 collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Together they will bring to life the existing lobby installation, creating “Galloping Gertie Under the Sea.”

Student Art Club members Gabrielle Gates, Riley Schuller, Aerrow Cruz, Shaun Madlinger, Brittany Foster, Irish McClendon, Brenna Parent, Courtney Stasio, Alix Wagner, Hudson Evans, Ricky Winslow, Andrea Daly and Caden Brinkman created the jelly fish in response to a study of the exhibit as it related to the marine dive park.

Buchanan’s solo exhibit will open in the Harbor History Museum Lobby Gallery on May 27, 2018. A Member Preview of Buchanan’s work and “Salmon, Seiners, and Life on the Sea” will be held on Saturday, May 26th, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

Born in Portland, Oregon, Buchanan was an honors graduate of Pacific Lutheran University and was influenced by Lute Faculty Tom Torrens and Mark Gulsrud.  Since 1993, Buchanan has been teaching Fine Art at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, Washington. In addition to an active gallery schedule, she has donated her art to charities including the Harbor History Museum, Washington Water Trails Association, and the Community Inclusion Program.

About Harbor History Museum: Harbor History Museum creates opportunities to experience the heritage of the greater Gig Harbor communities by collecting, preserving, and sharing the rich history of the area. Our vision is to be the cornerstone that provides a gathering place and a sense of identity for our community. Founded in 1964, the Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society dba Harbor History Museum opened its new facility in 2010. The museum campus includes an 1893 fully restored one-room school house; a 65-foot fishing vessel currently under restoration; 7,000 square feet of exhibition space; and a 900-square foot library, research and meeting room. The Museum provides a variety of public education programs. Our core educational program is the Pioneer School Experience (PSE), which serves over 1,400 students every year. Led by a trained “School Marm,” the children experience a pioneer school classroom complete with lessons, recitations, music, recess, and lunch. Our permanent exhibit features professionally designed exhibitions, larger-than-life experiences, and opportunities for hands-on exploration of our region’s rich history and unique heritage. Artifacts, video kiosks, hands-on exhibits, computer interactives, and a small theater bring Peninsula history to life in our permanent galleries. In addition, the Museum provides 3-5 special exhibits throughout the year so there is always something new to see and experience for our members and visitors.
