From Dana Campbell:

3/31 - Glastonbury - AMERICAN WOODCOCK peenting and flying around the marsh next to the Oak Street Stop and Shop at 10:00 p.m.  Hope he doesn't tire himself out in the eternal twilight of the parking lot lighting!

Dana,

You bring up a great point about light pollution, and its effects on birds.  While the street lights may lengthen the displays, I don't know if anyone has researched if it affects their overall health. Male woodcocks have a specific light intensity that they prefer for their displays, and they will display throughout the night, especially during a full moon.  There are quite a few woodcock who survive, and breed successfully in urban areas- the Hackensack meadows in NJ has quite a few displaying males every May, in the wee hours of the morning when we've been there during the World Series of Birding.

Good birding,
