A number of years ago in late August, there was a flying ant emergence at Eastern Point Beach in Groton. Herring and Ring-billed Gulls were doing some of the most awkward flycatching behavior one could imagine. The ants and gulls were everywhere. Almost as awkward, there was a very full crab apple along the Mystic River this winter. Both of the aforementioned gull species were alternately trying to grab the fruit on the fly or land on flimsy branches and pluck the fruit.
