Dashboard for Analyzing Ubiquitous Learning Log

Erdenesaikhan Lkhagvasuren (Department of Information Science and Intelligent Systems, Tokushima University, Tokushima, Japan), Kenji Matsuura (Centre for Administration of Information Technology, Tokushima University, Tokushima, Japan), Kousuke Mouri (Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan), Hiroaki Ogata (Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan)

Mobile and ubiquitous technologies have been applied to a wide range of learning fields such as science, social science, history and language learning. Many researchers have been investigating the development of ubiquitous learning environments; nevertheless, to date, there have not been enough research works related to the reflection, analysis and traces of learners' activities in the history of ubiquitous learning environment. Therefore this paper presents a research on the design and development of a dashboard function which proposes new opportunity for ubiquitous learning. The dashboard captures, analyzes and visualizes traces of learning activities in order to promote awareness and enables learners to reflect on their own activity and helps to recall what they have learned. An initial evaluation has been conducted with 14 international students. Results indicate that the dashboard is a useful tool for self-reflection on activities and recall what learners have learned by repeated quizzes.

Improved Personalized Recommendation based on Causal Association Rule and Collaborative Filtering

Wu Lei (Time Publishing and Media Co., Ltd., Hefei, China and School of Information Management, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China), Fang Qing (School of Information Management, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China), Jin Zhou (Institute of Intelligent Machines, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei, China)

There are usually limited user evaluation of resources on a recommender system, which caused an extremely sparse user rating matrix, and this greatly reduce the accuracy of personalized recommendation, especially for new users or new items. This paper presents a recommendation method based on rating prediction using causal association rules. First, users and items are mapped into two feature vectors, which would be minded later to get the causal association rules from the perspective of data mining; then based on the casual association rules, the authors create a preference matrix which would predict the rating of the items that users have not rated; finally a nearest neighbor similarity measure method is designed for personalized recommendation. Experiment shows that the algorithm efficiently improves the recommendation comparing to traditional methods.

An Adaptive E-Learning System based on Student's Learning Styles: An Empirical Study

Samia Drissi (Badji Mokhtar-Annaba University, Annaba, Algeria & Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Souk-Ahras, Souk-Ahras, Algeria), Abdelkrim Amirat (Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Souk-Ahras, Souk-Ahras, Algeria)

Personalized e-learning implementation is recognized as one of the most interesting research areas in the distance web-based education. Since the learning style of each learner is different one must fit e-learning with the different needs of learners. This paper presents an approach to integrate learning styles into adaptive e-learning hypermedia. The main objective was to develop a new Adaptive Educational Hypermedia System based on Honey and Mumford learning style model (AEHS-H&M) and assess the effect of adapting educational materials individualized to the student's learning style. To achieve the main objectives, a case study was developed. An experiment between two groups of students was conducted to evaluate the impact on learning achievement. Inferential statistics were applied to make inferences from the sample data to more general conditions was designed to evaluate the new approach of matching learning materials with learning styles and their influence on student's learning achievement. The findings support the use of learning styles as guideline for adaptation into the adaptive e-learning hypermedia systems.

A System for English Vocabulary Acquisition based on Code-Switching

Michal Mazur (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan), Krzysztof Karolczak (Lodz University of Technology, Lodz, Poland), Rafal Rzepka (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan), Kenji Araki (Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan)

Vocabulary plays an important part in second language learning and there are many existing techniques to facilitate word acquisition. One of these methods is code-switching, or mixing the vocabulary of two languages in one sentence. In this paper the authors propose an experimental system for computer-assisted English vocabulary learning in context using a code-switching based approach for Japanese learners. First they introduce the CO-MIX system, an English vocabulary teaching system that uses code-switching for vocabulary acquisition. Next, they show how they utilize incidental learning techniques with graded readers to increase language proficiency. The authors present the system architecture, underlying technologies, and evaluate the system's performance through user interaction with both a baseline and the proposed system by using a semantic differential scale. They also perform separate factor analysis of participants' attitudes for both systems, an analysis of users' mistakes and compare users' language tests scores. Finally, the authors discuss the evaluation results and further development of this technology.

Empirical Investigation into Motives for Choosing Web-based Distance Learning Programs

Mona Alkhattabi (College of Computer and Information Sciences, Al Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (IMSIU), Saudi Arabia)

Today, in association with rapid social and economic changes, there is an increasing level of demand for distance and online learning programs. This study will focus on identifying the main motivational factors for choosing a web-based distance-learning program. Moreover, it will investigate how these factors relate to age, gender, marital status and parenthood. The results are based on a questionnaire, which was conducted amongst students enrolled in the distance-learning programs provided by the E-learning and Distance Education Deanship at Al-Imam Mohammad bin Saud University during the autumn semester of 2013. In addition to their background characteristics, the survey aimed to determine students' motives for undertaking distance learning.

Applying Augmented Reality to a Mobile-Assisted Learning System for Martial Arts using Kinect Motion Capture

Wen-Chun Hsu (Department of Information and Learning Technology, National University of Tainan, Tainan, Taiwan), Ju-Ling Shih (Department of Information and Learning Technology, National University of Tainan, Tainan, Taiwan)

In this study, to learn the routine of Tantui, a branch of martial arts was taken as an object of research. Fitts' stages of motor learning and augmented reality (AR) were applied to a 3D mobile-assisted learning system for martial arts, which was characterized by free viewing angles. With the new system, learners could rotate the viewing angle of an image freely in a three-dimensional space, zoom in or zoom out the image, and adjust its playback speed. The experimental participants were divided into two groups, i.e., the experimental group (EG) and the control group (CG). The same coach instructed the EG through the 3D mobile-assisted learning system with AR capability while the CG was taught through a 2D video-based learning system on common mobile devices. Finally, a one-way ANOVA was performed to investigate the differences in learning performance between the two groups. Also, questionnaire surveys and interviews were conducted to understand whether the 3D free viewing angle of AR was helpful to cognitive learning of motor skills, learning motivation, learning satisfaction, and conditions of technology acceptance. It is expected that this findings herein will contribute to mobile-assisted learning and martial arts teaching in the future.
