Kingston Area Birds 12 April 2024 – 18 April 2024
Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email records directly
to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require
review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type
require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or
directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (
http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type
may be replaced by asterisks.
Overview: The weather is finally starting to warm up and some of the
spring migrants have started to arrive. With a forecast of warm weather
over the next week we should see some more birds move into the Kingston
Area. We are also seeing our winter visitors decrease in numbers as they
head back up to their breeding grounds.
*Parish Notes: *For the sake of saving time, I am currently only reporting
the birds that are considered rare for their location and time. As the
migration gets underway there are too many reports to sift through.

ICELAND GULL – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on Apr. 16
BLACK TERN – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on Apr. 16
SOLITARY SANDPIPER – 1 bird was seen at the Napanee Limestone Plain IBA
(L&A) on Apr. 18
LESSER YELLOWLEGS – 1 was seen at the Russell Road Wetland Complex (L&G) on
Apr. 15, 1 on Apr. 16 and 1 on Apr. 18
UPLAND SANDPIPER – 3 birds were seen on Wolfe Island on Apr. 18
VIRGINIA RAIL – 1 bird was seen on Wolfe Island on Apr. 17, 2 on Apr. 18; 1
was seen on the Burbrook Road Trail on Apr. 17; 1 was seen on the K&P Trail
(Sydenham Road section) on Apr. 18; 1 was seen at the Unity Road Marshes on
Apr. 18; 1 was seen on the Cataraqui Trail east of Highway 15 (L&G) on Apr.
17; 1 was seen on County Road 2 East of Mitchellville (L&G) on Apr. 18; 1
was seen on McIntyre Road (L&A) on Apr. 17; 1 was seen at the Moscow Marsh
(L&A) on Apr. 18
SORA – 1 bird was seen at the Napanee Limestone Plain IBA (L&A) on Apr. 18
BLACK VULTURE – 1 bird was seen on Kidd Road (L&G) on Apr. 13
GOLDEN EAGLE – 1 bird was seen at the Russell Road Wetland Complex (L&G) on
Apr. 14
SNOWY OWL – 1 late bird was seen on Wolfe Island on Apr. 17, 1 on Apr. 18;
1 was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on Apr. 17
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW – 20 birds were seen at Lemoine Point CA on
Apr. 16
CLIFF SWALLOW – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on Apr.
17; 4 were seen at the Amherstview Sewage Lagoon (L&A) on Apr. 18
FISH CROW – 1 bird was seen at The Great Lakes Museum on Apr. 12; 2 were
seen on Sydenham Street on Apr. 17; 2 were seen in City Park on Apr. 18
(presumably the same 2 birds in all of these reports)
NORTHERN SHRIKE – 1 bird was seen at Lemoine Point CA on Apr. 13, 1 on Apr.
14 and 1 on Apr. 16; 1 was seen at the Russell Road Wetland Complex (L&G)
on Apr. 15, 1 on Apr. 16; 1 was seen on McIntyre Road (L&A) on Apr. 14; 1
was seen in Tamworth (L&A) on Apr. 17
NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD – 1 bird was seen at the Graham Road Swamp on Apr. 16;
1 was seen on Wolfe Island on Apr. 18
BOHEMIAN WAXWING – 4 birds were seen at 104 Hardwood Lane on Apr. 12; 7
birds were seen at Frontenac Provincial Park on Apr. 14
TUFTED TITMOUSE – 2 birds were seen in the Glen Lawrence Woods on Apr. 13,
1 on Apr. 14, 1 on Apr. 15; 2 were seen on Bateau Lane on Apr. 13; 2 were
seen on Montreal Street on Apr. 13, 1 on Apr. 14, 1 on Apr. 15, 2 on Apr.
17; 1 was seen at the Graham Road Swamp on Apr. 16; 1 was seen on Glen
Lawrence Crescent on Apr. 17
MARSH WREN – 1 bird was seen at Lemoine Point CA on Apr. 16; 1 was seen on
Simcoe Island on Apr. 18
CAROLINA WREN – 1 bird was seen on Amherst Island (L&A) on Apr. 18
BLUE-HEADED VIREO – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on
Apr. 18
AMERICAN PIPIT – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on Apr. 13
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW – 1 was seen at 4837 County Road 2 (L&G) on Apr. 13,
14 and 18; 1 was seen on Country Club Drive, Bath (L&A) on Apr. 15, 1 on
Apr. 17
RED CROSSBILL – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC) on Apr. 12
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA (PEC)
on Apr. 13

Please note that you must be a card-carrying member of Kingston Field
Naturalists (KFN), or be accompanied by a member, to access both the Martin
Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. Permits are being checked
on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN
members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west
gate and show their membership card to security.
