South Carolina State University News May 1, 2013 SC State University Teacher Education Program Inducts 26 Students On May 6, 2013, 26 multi-talented teacher education candidates in teacher preparation programs such as, early childhood, elementary, mathematics, music, speech pathology, English, and drama education will be inducted in the teaching profession. Dr. W. Franklin Evans, vice president of Academic Affairs at SC State University, will be the speaker for this semi- annual induction program. The College of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences has one of the few teacher preparation programs in South Carolina, where 100 percent of its teacher education candidates graduate certifiable (having met all requirements to be licensed as a certified teacher upon graduation). According to Dr. Janice Belton-Owens, professor of Teacher Education and director of Clinical Experiences, Evaluation and Certification at SC State University, this makes SC State teacher education graduates marketable, and one of the most highly sought after group of teachers by school districts from more than 40 states in the United States as well as school systems abroad and the Caribbean Islands. In addition, to being diverse in the various teaching disciplines, six of these teacher education candidates are males, two of whom are mathematics education majors, which will make a significant impact on the critical shortage of male teachers in the critical needs area in S.C. These 26 teacher education candidates recently completed student teaching in diverse Pre-K-12 school districts in S.C. Upon completion of the 62 day internship, these candidates will be eligible for a teaching license to teach in the state of South Carolina, with reciprocity in more than 40 other states. SANDRA M.
