There may be a real "trawler based" utalization of such networks. If your
boat is at anchor, on a mooring or in a marina and you wanted to moniter
systems from a remote computer (lets say at home or when traveling), you
could set up the computer on the boat to moniter certain permiters and
transmit those to the DSL line and thus home. There could even be some
functions that could be activated by remote.
When you come into a harbour--you check into the "net" and exchange
information--or the marina sends you the information about the surrounding
area. This would be a variation of some of the wireless connections in some
cities and airports etc.
You want to keep in touch with you buddies that your are crusing with--you
not only exchange E-mails (within the 800 foot range) but charts/or other
information.
Is this possiable?

I am also a network corinthian but the GNU argeement (that my geek friends talk
about) means that the concept, code, etc. is a product of other GNU licensed
software and is therefore designed to allow implementation of ideas just like
you outlined in your post. For folks like me, a marina application, trawler
application, must have at least one geek involved to make it work because
there's no factory service, you're on your own. In fact, flashing the
transmitter with the program will probably void the equipment warranty.
What about security? (from the provious post).---- I understand that network
neighborhood issues of file share are not the security problem, but anyone
within the 300' plus area could be on the "community" network and could have
bought their own gear and be using the bandwidth, but getting "in" your computer
is (I think) not any easier than hacking in under regular circumstances.
I agree, the idea of wireless mooring moniter using such a system is pretty cool
too. I hope to use it at my marina to support the DSL connection with which I
intend to transmit a webcam image/ weather, wind, conditions info so I'll know
whether to run down and adjust lines on the dozen or so, boats that I agreed to
care for, for absentee owners. (another story for later). John Reitzammer,
