Highlights of reports received October 3 through October 10
from the Niagara Frontier Region include WHITE-EYED VIREO,
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, MERLIN and a Big Day
    report.

October 6, an immature WHITE-EYED VIREO was reported at
Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo. There is just one previous
fall record of WHITE-EYED VIREO in the BOS archives, a
record that also occurred during the first week of October.

At the Batavia Waste Water Plant, a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was
reported on October 10, the last date for the species in the
BOS Verification Date Guide. Right on time for the Date
Guide, the first LAPLAND LONGSPUR of the season was reported
October 5, on the perimeter road of the Lewiston Reservoir.

October 3, the count of MERLINS on the University at Buffalo
Main Street campus jumped to four birds.

A Big Day birding effort by two birders on October 6
recorded 118 species, mostly between the Lake Ontario
Plains, Iroquois Refuge, Batavia Waste Water Plant and Goat
Island in Niagara Falls. Highlights were five owl species
including a very rare BARN OWL heard in the Town of Oakfield
and an early NOR. SAW-WHET OWL heard at Golden Hill State
Park in Somerset, plus EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, GREAT HORNED OWL
and BARRED OWL. Other highights were 4 EARED GREBES still at
the Batavia Waste Water Plant and an early BRANT on Lake
Ontario. At the Iroquois Refuge, PEREGRINE FALCON at the
Feeder Road and 3 STILT SANDPIPERS at Center Marsh on Sour
Springs Road. And at Goat Island, 4 L. BLACK-B. GULLS.

October 5, a fallout of night migrants into at yard on
Woodbridge Avenue in Buffalo included a one-week-late GR.
CR. FLYCATCHER, plus YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER, EASTERN WOOD-
PEWEE, WINTER WREN, RUBY-CR. KINGLET, a late VEERY, GRAY-
CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH and 5 WHITE-THR. SPARROWS.
And on October 4, a COMMON NIGHTHAWK was heard over Buffalo.

Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, October 17.
Please call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may
report sightings after the tone. Thank you for calling and
