TWL: Re: Dinghy Motor Recommendation

Last month I posted a request for recommendations for a new motor for my
Achilles high pressure air floor 10' 4" dinghy.

I received 7 replies, mostly off list.  There was agreement that this dinghy
would plane with one adult onboard on 5 hp but require 10 hp for two adults
to go fast.  Several recommended 2 stroke over 4 stroke unless I intended to
leave the motor on the dinghy all the time (I don't).  Apparently the
advantages of 4 stroke outboards are not as great in these small motors.

Also, while several listees recommended the 10 hp motor, they also warned
about the weight and handling while removing and installing the engine on
the dinghy.

We visited the motor dealer and lifted and handled the engines and decided
we'd better stay with the 5 hp.  The few extra pounds for the 9.9 hp motor
were very noticeable.

So I'm the owner of a new Merc 5 hp.  In a week or so I will let you know
how it works out with one and with two adults aboard.

Thanks
