<!-- DIV {margin:0px;} -->Thanks to everyone for a lively discussion on Wednesday regarding Scoring Rules for 2019. Attached is the final document, which will be posted to club website and the the Cruising fleet site.

This reflects Fleet Captain final decision on two point for the Wednesday Night Series:

  1. DNC = starters +2
  2. Pursuit Races will not count for the Wednesday Night Series.

FOR THIS SUNDAY (tomorrow, MAY 5), YOU MAY WANT TO REPLY ALL TO LET OTHERS KNOW IF YOU EXPECT TO RACE -- BUT ONLY IF YOU ARE YES OR MAYBE.

If everyone intending to race tomorrow does so, you'll see if you can expect any competitors.

For a race to count, two boats must compete (register with the RC while underway) and one must cross the finish line.

SHEBA will not be racing tomorrow. Hope to be out Wednesday -- Tony Martin

Subject: 2019 Race Scoring for discussion: Wednesday Night Racing Meeting, May 1st, 7:30

Attached you'll find a final draft of the proposed series scoring rules for PHRF racing at Nyack Boat Club for the 2019 season. This document covers scoring for three different series for the season:

  1. Wednesday Night Series -- Fleet Awards
  2. Sunday/Regatta Series -- Fleet Awards
  3. NBC Cruising Fleet Club Champion Series -- Club Awards

We should have a lively discussion about proposed changes, notably:

  • Sunday/Regatta and Cruising Club Champion series are scored on a very different basis from last season -- Cox-Sprague high scoring, you can include all HRYRA events, and the Club Champion is an overall award combining results for all PHRF divisions.
  • Wednesday Night Series is generally unchanged, but we'd like to have participants weigh in on two issues for the 2019 season as we finalize the rules:
  1. Under last year's rules a DNC (did not compete) received a race score of the number of starters +3. We're considering a change where DNC=DNS (did not start) = number of starters +1.

Note Appedix A of the RRS A9 suggests the following:
A9. RACE SCORES IN A SERIES LONGER THAN A REGATTA

For a series that is held over a period of time longer than a regatta, a boat that came to the starting area but did not <a class="definition-popover" data-html="true" data-placement="auto" data-title="<strong>Definition: Start</strong>" data-trigger="manual" data-url="/definitions/39?xformat=fleet" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background: radial-gradient(yellow, white, white); box-sizing: border-box; font-style: italic;" tabindex="0">start</a>, did not <a class="definition-popover" data-html="true" data-placement="auto" data-title="<strong>Definition: Finish</strong>" data-trigger="manual" data-url="/definitions/48?xformat=fleet" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; background: radial-gradient(yellow, white, white); box-sizing: border-box; font-style: italic;" tabindex="0">finish</a>, retired or was disqualified shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats that came to the starting area. A boat that did not come to the starting area shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats entered in the series.

We definitely don't want to make a DNC= boats in the series +1, a much higher number.. Pros and cons of the "+3":

  • PRO: This "penalty" for not competing on a given night was instituted to provide a further incentive to come out and race on Wednesdays. Skippers "on the fence" will want to come out to avoid a DNC+3.
  • CON: Most boats miss a race because of constraints on the time and schedule of skipper and crew -- no need for a special penalty under these circumstances. In face, there's no evidence that DNC+3 actually encourages greater participation.
  1. Pursuit Races on Wednesday nights started out as a break from competition -- as "just for fun" races", and not counting for series awards. Last year we only counted the earlier of two Wednesday Night Pursuit Races in any series. The fleet thought the final Pursuit Race would be more fun if we did not count the scores in our series. However, the proposed 2019 scoring includes both Pursuit Races in the Wednesday and Club Champ series. Proposed choices are:
  • Count all Pursuit Races in the applicable series.
  • Keep last year's rule: exclude the 2nd Pursuit Race for the Wednesday Night Series (but keep for Club Chamipion Series, since this includes performance in a wide variety of races).
  • Exclude some or all Pursuit Races from all series scoring.

Your thoughts welcome on all these points. See you at tonight's meeting (and if you can't make it, please send comments and questions via email). Thanks -- Tony Martin, 2019 Cruising Fleet Scoring Drone
