Butch:

Let me suggest another approach which you should try and which applies to
anyone that has purchased a generic, hockey puck type GPS. This recommendation
is for any GPS that puts out a standand NMEA 0183 data format.

  1. Go to the Delorme home site and download the program: Delorme Diagnostic.
Install it and put an icon on your desktop. It can be used with any GPS.

  2. Plug in your GPS and start the diagnostic program. It will help you locate
the com port that the GPS is using, and when you click on the Start Testing
button, the GPS data stream will appear on your screen. I use this test every
time before I start my nav program, regardless of which one you use. If you
installed the right driver for your GPS, it should be working. If you did not,
then you have to find out where the problem is located.

  3. Start your nav program and go to the find and configure GPS command. It
should work automatically after the first time.

While this sounds complicated, it isn't. I have used this approach to help a
number of fellow cruisers, even while I was guiding them via cell phone and
they were in a panic because they were out on the water and their nav program
had crashed.  Martin I. Veiner
