Generally, additional weight from a hardtop versus a soft top enclosure is NOT
an issue unless a boat is already unstable;just don't make the hard top out of
concrete!!
I made my own hardtop and posted ad nauseum details here..Quite a few here
said laminated plywood and fiberglass over would be a weight concern...it was
not...I epoxied two 3/16" layers of plywood together bent to my old soft
enclosure fram shape....and then dynel fabric and fiberglass over that...The
whole thing can't weight more than 100 lbs...likely less....I made it to fit
the old stainless supports and added some awthships bracing...the thing holds
me...spread out on my stomach...I figure 100 lbs at that height is about the
roll effect of an adult on the bridge...not noticeable,,,
I included a pair of opening 2ft x 2ft hatches...I like them but it's amazing
how often sunlight is right on my plotter screen!!!..They are about 18 inches
from the front edge of the hardtop...Wind deflection from the flybridge front
prevents most wind from getting in..opening a front zipper admits a lot more
breeze when underway...My Yorkie likes the hatches because sometimes she gets
to doze in sunlight on the flybridge...
If you run from the flybridge often as I do, you'll love the hardtop...no more
drips from overhead in rain. But wind driven rain WILL come in from the zipper
soft enclosure, so it's not perfectly dry.
good luck.
