Hi Chris,
I just downloaded uhd_003.009.002-release from (running Windows 10 x64):
http://files.ettus.com/binaries/uhd/uhd_003.009.002-release/uhd_003.009.002-release_Win64_VS2013.exe
I let the installer run and only changed the option to set the PATH for all
users. It should also install the images during this as well.
I then ran:
C:\Program Files (x86)\UHD\bin\uhd_usrp_probe.exe
And it ran Ok.
Even if you have to run the image downloader, it will install them to the
correct directory. Did you use the default install directory when you
installed UHD? I'm not quite sure if that will cause an issue, but I'll
test.
Also, do you have anything in "C:\Program Files (x86)\UHD..." still? I see
now you have installed to just "C:\Program Files\UHD\

Chris,
Can you try running your command prompt as administrator? I just tested
with by installing to the a different path like you showed and got some
funky results. Had to run cmd as admin to be able to download images to the
right directory.
I'll look into this further. Let me know your results.

I had deleted any remnants of UHD in the Program Files x86 folder after
settling on "Program Files" as probably being safer and more reliable.
C:\Program Files\UHD\share\uhd\images contains a file named 003.009.002.tag
that says
003.009.002-release

I appreciate you looking into the problem. Here is what I have done to try to understand the problem.
I installed UHD_003.009.001-release which gave me new firmware and fpga images.
I still had usrp_b200_fpga.bin and usrp_b200_fw.hex images from ExtIO_USRP… installed in my b200
Ran uhd_image_loader –args=”type=B200” which loaded the fpga image but not the fw image
Ran uhd_usrp_probe but it failed.
Cycled the power
Ran uhd_usrp_probe – the fw image was loaded, detected device: b200, then loaded fpga image
Success – reported B200 Revision 4, FW version 8, and FPGA version 11
Renamed C:\Program Files (x86)\UHD\share\uhd\images to imagesold and created new images
Placed usrp_b200_fpga.bin in the new images directory
Ran uhd_image_loader –args=”type=B200” which loaded the fpga image but not the fw image
Ran uhd_usrp_probe but it complained that there was no usrp_b200_fw.hex in the images directory
Put the usrp_b200_fw.hex from UHD_003.009.001 into the images directory
Ran uhd_usrp_probe – it reported detected device: B200 and operating over USB 2 and then it failed reporting “Error: RunTimeError: Expected FPGA compatibility number 11 but got 3: The FPGA build is not compatible with the host code build.”
Replaced usrp_b200_fw.hex with the version from ExtIO_USRP…
Ran uhd_usrp_probe – it reported that it was loading the firmware: usrp_b200_fw.hex and then it failed reporting “Error: RunTimeError: Expected firmware compatibility number 8 but got 4: The firmware build is not compatible with the host code build.”
It appears that the images from ExtIO_USRP… are not compatible with each other and fpga images is not compatible with firmware version from UHD_003.009.001.
I also download uhd-images_003.008.001-release and attempted to use usrp_b200_fpga.bin and usrp_b200_fw.hex and got a similar error “Error: RunTimeError: Expected firmware compatibility number 8 but got 7: The firmware build is not compatible with the host code build.”
An interesting side note is that uhd_image_loader –args=”type=B200” –fw=usrp_b200_fw.hex results in the system report that the FPGA images is loading not the firmware.
Not sure what to try next. Thoughts?

I had with the verison 1.6 some similar strange issues, and I was able to overcome them with putting the files all in one folder, HDSDR, firmware, image, extio stuff, some dll files. This way I was able to get it up and running with HDSDR and SDR#, only limited to the <2.4 GHz range with SDR#, while HDSDR handles this.
This afternoon or evening I will try out 1.7 and let the list know what happens. Went to work today without my B210 (what a shame :), so I can't test this during the lunch break.

For some reasons this new EXTIO version seems to copy the old firmware and FPGA images into the HDSDR folder, this may cause irritations, as the software has the first look in its own folder for available stuff, then it may search the path, or not. So first I would do is deleting this old stuff, and when the new stuff is not found copying it manually into the HDSDR folder should do the trick, this is what I had one or two years ago with this stuff :)
Just had a look at the installation, the test with the hardware still has to wait a bit.

This can't work :( It expects FPGA 12 for my B210, but 3.9.1 has 11, and 3.9.2 has 13 - looks there is no 12 :(

Replaced usrp_b200_fw.hex with the version from ExtIO_USRP…
Ran uhd_usrp_probe – it reported that it was loading the firmware: usrp_b200_fw.hex and then it failed reporting “Error: RunTimeError: Expected firmware compatibility number 8 but got 4: The firmware build is not compatible with the host code build.”
It appears that the images from ExtIO_USRP… are not compatible with each other and fpga images is not compatible with firmware version from UHD_003.009.001.
I also download uhd-images_003.008.001-release and attempted to use usrp_b200_fpga.bin and usrp_b200_fw.hex and got a similar error “Error: RunTimeError: Expected firmware compatibility number 8 but got 7: The firmware build is not compatible with the host code build.”
An interesting side note is that uhd_image_loader –args=”type=B200” –fw=usrp_b200_fw.hex results in the system report that the FPGA images is loading not the firmware.
Not sure what to try next. Thoughts?

Even if you have to run the image downloader, it will install them to the correct directory. Did you use the default install directory when you installed UHD? I'm not quite sure if that will cause an issue, but I'll test.
Also, do you have anything in "C:\Program Files (x86)\UHD..." still? I see now you have installed to just "C:\Program Files\UHD\

Is there something I can do to troubleshoot where it's getting the firmware it is comparing compatibility numbers with?
Do I need to do something manually WITH the downloaded images?
Sorry, some our back and forth with testing HDSDR migrated off the list.
I'll post the info here so others can see.
I have been playing around with the ExtIO install and HDSDR setup. To get
the images in the right place, you need to copy them from UHD images
directory to the directory where you installed ExtIO, HDSDR, etc. You will
see version of the FPGA and FW images there already and you would just
overwrite those. I figured that it would look in the UHD directory for the
images, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Unfortunately, it seems like the support for UHD was built somewhere in
between the 3.9.1 (compat 11) release and the 3.9.2 release (compat 13), so
you can't get the correct images downloaded for the FPGA. We are working
with the author of ExtIO to see if we can address this issue.
I'll keep you updated if I find out anything new or if I find a way to make
it work.

overcome them with putting the files all in one folder, HDSDR, firmware,
image, extio stuff, some dll files. This way I was able to get it up and
running with HDSDR and SDR#, only limited to the <2.4 GHz range with SDR#,
while HDSDR handles this.
This afternoon or evening I will try out 1.7 and let the list know what
happens. Went to work today without my B210 (what a shame :), so I can't
test this during the lunch break.

Yeah, it looks like it was built with an interim release. I was told by
Ettus that they are now coordinating to try to get a new Extio binary
release in sync with the latest UHD binary release so this stuff can
actually work together.

Is there something I can do to troubleshoot where it's getting the firmware it is comparing compatibility numbers with?
Do I need to do something manually WITH the downloaded images?
