gsm phones in SE Alaska

While cruising from about 1995 to 2002, we have always
used an ATT cellphone on the Onerate plan in SE
Alaska. We plan to return this summer.  Now that ATT
and Cingular have merged we are looking at changing to
a Cingular gsm phone and plan. We are primarily
intersted in using it for voice transmission. It's
unclear to us whether we would have coverage in SE
Alaska and if we did, would it be covered under our
plan as far as long distance and roaming charges. The
sales folks have told us that we wouldn't have
coverage, but they also told us the same thing years
ago for our ATT phone and we did. Hopefully some of
our listees who are more technically oriented can
guide us. If it won't work, we will probably keep our
ATT phone as we're not to wild about Verizon now that
Carlyle has bought out our local (Hawaii) Verizon.
Thanks, Dick

How interesting!

I just switched from ATT TDMA to Cingular GSM.  After looking at length at the
coverage info on their web site I concluded that GSM coverage in SE AK should be
at least as good as TDMA was.  Hope that's right!

I wanted to get away from TDMA because coverage has DECREASED in parts of Utah,
and also BC, since I first got ATT in 1999.  They seemed to have put lower
priority on TDMA coverage and/or roaming agreements in recent years (regardless
of my supposedly nationwide One-Rate contract), and have placed their bets more
on GSM.  That's what my Cingular dealer said, as well.

I sure would be pleased if GSM coverage in the PNW is better than the
deteriorating TDMA coverage up there.  Does anyone know more specifically?
