A couple of points to consider:
You are going to spend some real time negotiating what MTOA has already negotiated.
Then you have to keep on top of it to insure it stays that way.
MTOA is constantly reviewing the issue which is something I don't want to do.
When your boat gets old (my last one was) you won't have to shop around to find someone to insure it. MTOA has convinced their insurer that members' boats are better maintained than most, even if elderly, and the members are less likely to do something dumb, even if elderly.
I just sent in my MTOA renewal. $67.00 for a year, I believe.
Not a bad deal and you get a cute burgee.

Thanks.
I'm not clear that one cannot get that endorsement without the MTOA membership. My conversations today touched on the subject but I'm sure we were both talking about the same thing.
That's one of the issues I hope to clear up on Wednesday.

I note that no one has answered your question.
The answer is yes, join MTOA and you get that.

Fred,
I'm really not expecting to be negotiating. I'm only wanting to figure
out what the options are.
My boat is already old (1988), but not as old as me.
One of the points that I attempted to make with the people that I talked to
yesterday was that the underwriting criteria for increasing premiums or
restrictions on "old" boats seems to me to be a false one. The surveyor
supposedly does the evaluating.
I may have said earlier that as an underwriter I would spend more time
trying to evaluate the operator of the boat if possible. Unfortunately
however I don't have any sense of how the actual losses play out. It's the
loss ratio that really should determine pricing & policy terms and
conditions.
As respects burgees, that certainly is consideration.
So tonight I make some notes in preparation for tomorrow's phone calls.
BTW, one of the people that I hope you talk to would be a Claims Adjuster.
Those are the folks that can really make your life miserable.
