Our boat came with a cheap foam mattress.  It's finally given up the ghost
and we are looking for a new mattress.  The custom inner spring mattresses
made for boats are quite expensive.  If they last for a long time they are a
good deal.  What would you recommend?

Instead of purchasing a "marine innerspring mattress....find one of the many
independent mattress makers and have them custom make the size and shape you
need for a lot less.  I sure several have experience with boats.

Hello:

Our boat came with a cheap foam mattress.  It's finally given up the ghost
and we are looking for a new mattress.  The custom inner spring mattresses
made for boats are quite expensive. What would you recommend?

Ours also "gave up the ghost".    We looked into some of the custom options,
and decided to try something different first.  There is a "Surplus" store
which sells foam in lots of sizes and thicknesses not too far away.

After measuring the size of the existing mattress we ordered a piece of foam
4" thick, and slightly larger than what was there.  We took this piece to
the boat, and laid the orignal matrees on top of it (in the parking lot of
the marina, actually).

A sharpie marker was used to outline the shape of the original.  We then cut
the new foam to match with an old electric knife.  It worked like a charm.
(Hot knife through butter, etc).

Finally, the new foam was put on top of the old matress and it is
wonderfully comfortable.  In fact, it's more comfortable than the "quality
flat bed matress" we have in our house.  The fitted sheets still work just
fine.

All together, the new foam cost $39.00 for a slightly smaller than queen
size mattress.

PS  Above new e-mail address will be effective as of Monday Feb. 28th.  We
are going to have to unsusbcribe from the list, but will also have a web
page for anyone who would like to keep up with our adventure.  I'll post the
web site url, too.

I was recently at the Seattle Boat Show and visited a display by "Handcraft
Mattress Company" in Gig Harbor Washington.  They sell custom mattresses
made to order.  The innerspring mattress is quite expensive, yet there is a
latex mattress that is much more reasonable.  I tried one out and they feel
quite comfortable.  These come in 4", 5", and 6" thickness and are covered
with typical ticking.  They are fairly light and flexible so can be moved
into the boat and lifted for any reason once onboard.  These are made in
Santa Ana, CA and can be viewed at www.boatbeds.com

I have no vested interest in this company, but may be making a purchase from
them in the near future.

How about a good Foam mattress instead of a cheap one. Get real hi density
good quality foam and I think you will be as happy as we are. Our local
supplier is Zeno in FTL.

Be careful of the light ones, they are polyfoam and not very good. the real
foam  will be heavy.
