This is a public service announcement. My Host provider (1and1) has in formed me that traffic on ko4bb.com has consistently and grossly exceeded the unlimited bandwidth allocation specified by contract(!!!) They have also turned off my service a few times this month to emphasize the message. I have been a customer for about 10 years but apparently nowadays that does not count for much. This must be the new math, 2TB/month > infinite, or maybe unlimited is not the same as infinite... It turns out that many providers have responded the same way when asked if 2TB/month was less than the unlimited promise of shared hosting. Therefore I have to upgrade to a better class of service. As expected, there is a big price gap between services that offer unlimited bandwidth (they are all cheap shared hosts) and those that offer "only" 2TB/month (typically virtual private systems or managed servers). The cost goes up by a factor of about 10 or more. I have identified a new service provider: MyHosting.com and I am in the process of migrating everything, including the 65GB or so of manuals and related files (and the other 60GB of other stuff). The new service is now a Virtual Private Server, as opposed to a shared host. That means I have my own private virtual machine and full access to the OS, which is a blessing and a curse, as I can do anything I want (pretty much) but I have to do everything else too myself (like software maintenance). The price has gone up significantly, but MyHosting.com has a nice setup where you can pretty much rent as much CPU/memory/hard drive and bandwidth as you need, and it is easy to change on the fly. I am in the process of setting up the new server. I will make an announcement when it is online, probably in a couple of weeks. There may be a short interruption while the DNS caches are flushed. Be assured that none of the manuals are lost, but there were a large number of manuals uploaded this month and they are going to be in temporary storage (unsorted in the Stuff Not Sorted folder) for a little while. Also, I will ask you to postpone making large uploads until I have moved to the new server. I will turn off uploads a few days before the switch. I may call on you on occasion. The new server runs on CentOS v6, not sure if there are any plans to upgrade to v7. Didier, I would look into just putting something like Cloudflare infront of KO4BB... this should cache all your content relatively well, and greatly reduce the load on your provider. They have a free tier that works quite well, and even their paid tiers are much cheaper than an ISP that would work for that kind of bandwidth (I had no idea it was so high, but it is a great resource). All, There’s an apache plugin that allows you to get the statistics from cloudflare on each hit. Take a look at mod_cloudflare (https://www.cloudflare.com/resources-downloads) I use it, works great. I guess the question that comes to me is why is cloudflare free? I understand why Didier does what he does for free, he's giving back by serving a community to which he is a member. Since Cloudflare has a paid service as well the working assumption is the 'free' service is more of a try before you buy and allows colleges and others to demonstrate the value of the service so budget can be requested. I'm sure the analytics are not as detailed as the paid version etc Another company with a similar model is Splunk which is a log analyzer and event correlation tool. I plan to run the new site for about a month to see how it is doing (I have a 30 days try out period anyhow) and if all goes well, I will give Cloudflare a try. Just to let everyone know (it will be announced on the site), I will have a 50 files/day download limit initially to limit the rogue downloads which have been causing most of the problems. If that turns out to be a problem, I could have a limit based on file size instead, or a combination of the two. I would rather not go to a registration process, I want to keep the site as open and simple as possible. I have also opened a trial with Linode, on the suggestion of one time-nut and all the manuals are on that site too. In case MyHosting falls flat, I should be able to switch rapidly. Linode appears to be a little harder to setup, maybe due to their use of CentOS 7 versus version 6 for MyHosting.
