Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsLarry Golkin,
I have to say, your idea of employing fishermen is much too simple and
makes too much sense for the government to ever consider it! That would
solve both the fish problem as well as the unemployment problem.
Naaaa, it'll never happen, it would be too easy.

Subject: GL: Asian Carp and Closing the Loop
Hi Folks:
I have resisted responding to this topic for a long time as it was my most
sincere hope the loop would not close over a fish. I do have a solution
nobody has suggested. Send out a flyer:
"Hello all unemployed Americans who love to fish - want to get paid $10.00
per
hour for 8 hours per day, 5 days per week to fish for Asian Carp? The US
Government and the Army Corps of Engineers will pay you and will supply
you
with all the bait and poles, hooks, line, and any other tackle you
possibly
need. All you have to do is fish. We'll even cut you a deal on quality
domestic beer. Meet just south of Chicago, but anywhere between Mobile Bay
and
the Great Lakes would do."
Get it? Catch the invaders, eat them, and solve the problem.
This would be far less costly than a rail, a lock, or the inestimable
damage
to the economy caused by closing one of America's major shipping arteries.
Besides, my wife and I will be starting our loop trip from Corpus Christi
next
November and would like to be able to say we completed the loop. We will
be
trucking our boat from Channel Islands, California. Hope to see many of
you
and make your acquaintance.

My neighbor in Minnesota said we should wait until the river freezes, drill
holes in the ice and stick outboards motors in the holes. Since the noise
of outboards make them jump, they will jump, hit their heads on the ice and
die of massive head injuries......makes sense to me....;-)

currently at anchor during our first loop at Stump Pass (north of Ft.
Myers)...and hoping we can complete it without using a big truck...would
that count as a loop???

The Asian carp do not go after bait as they are plant eaters. However, they
can be shocked with electric current or noise to get them to jump. Have seen
people with bows on the front of pontoon boats hunting them here in St. Louis.
Great sport. Did hear of a person that wanted to build a special boat that
would harvest and load the fish to be used for pet food or fertilizer. He
could not get the funding to build the boat as the price per pound would not
work. Seems that maybe some Federal and state money would subsidise the costs
and make it work.
The other option would be to breed a fresh water shark that only had a taste
for Asian carp. Problem would take care of itself.
