Highlights of reports received July 3 through July 10 from  the
Niagara Frontier Region include AMERICAN AVOCET, YEL.-
CR. NIGHT-HERON, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and PROTHONOTARY WARBLER.

July 9, at Dunkirk Harbor on Lake Erie in Chautauqua County,  an
exceptional record of 5 AMERICAN AVOCETS on the Main  Street Beach. The
avocets were seen at least through to the  evening.

The evening of July 3, a kayaker discovered a very rare  adult
YEL.-CR. NIGHT-HERON on Strawberry Island in the upper  Niagara River
off Buffalo's Riverside. The island is too  distant to observe from the
shore, but the heron may linger  on the upper river with the many
BL.-CR. NIGHT-HERONS that  are found on Motor Island and at Beaver
Island State Park on  Grand Island.

July 6, an unexpected female ORCHARD ORIOLE at the Tillman  Wildlife
Management Area in Clarence, found on Shisler Road  beyond the tire
dump. Also at Tillman, 3 UPLAND SANDPIPERS,  2 HORNED LARKS and at
    least 6 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS.

In the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area, July 4, a  PROTHONOTARY
WARBLER at the Education Center parking lot on  Knowlesville Road,
across from the Swallow Hollow Trail.

From Allegany State Park and surrounding areas, June 29  through July
5, 88 species were tallied including COMMON  MERGANSER, 3 OSPREY nests,
BROAD-WINGED HAWK, BARRED OWL,  ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, COMMON RAVEN,
RED-BR. NUTHATCH,  SWAINSON'S THRUSH, BROWN THRASHER, and 17 warbler
species  highlighted by NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW-R. WARBLER, YELLOW-
THR. WARBLER, PINE WARBLER and LA. WATERTHRUSH.

July 4, a combined list of 70 species at the Batavia Waste  Water
Plant and Iroquois Refuge area. At the waste water  plant, WOOD DUCK
and HOODED MERGANSER with young, GADWALL,  two each of BLUE-WINGED TEAL
and RING-NECKED DUCK, and 35  RUDDY DUCKS. At Swallow Hollow Trail in
the Iroquois Refuge,  YELLOW-THR. VIREO, 3 TUFTED TITMICE and 6 RED-BR.
NUTHATCHES. At Cayuga Pool, 6 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 4 GREAT  EGRETS,
BALD EAGLE and 26 BLACK TERNS. And at Wood Marsh in  the Tonawanda
Wildlife Management Area, an AMERICAN BITTERN.

In Cattaraugus County this week, at least 8 PRAIRIE WARBLERS  on
private property at Hilliker and Keller Roads in the Town  of
Yorkshire. In Ashford, at Thomas Corners and Bond Road, 5  VESPER
    SPARROWS and a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD.

At the Wilson Piers on Lake Ontario, a surprising appearance  of 24
BONAPARTE'S GULLS with 10 CASPIAN TERNS and 5 COMMON  TERNS.

And from Buffalo this week - GREEN HERON heard over  Woodbridge Ave.
PEREGRINE FALCON atop the tall chimney along  Winspear Ave on the UB
Main Street Campus. And at Tifft  Nature Preserve, 36 species included
COMMON MOORHEN with  young, LEAST BITTERN and AMERICAN WOODCOCK.

Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, July 17.  Please call
in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may  report sightings after the
tone. Thank you for calling and  reporting to Dial-a-Bird.
