Why are those guys here?
From: Wayne & Lynn Flatt mvskinwalker@hotmail.com
WAYNE AND LYNN, I see it too.
I used to be a regular poster, now, I look through the subjects and four out
of five day, I delete the Trawlering string of messages without reading them.
WHERE ARE THE CRUISERS!
We do an annual two month summer cruise, and post our Email logs to the site.
We write for boating magazines, and carry a computer on board. We use it
daily for E-mail and then put the computer away. I do too much of it when I'm at
home or in the office.
This list DEFINITELY has too many "arm chair boaters" speaking their mind as
posing as experts.
Some of the posters thankfully have been there and are REAL boater, and thank
you for your posts, they are GREAT.
Some just like to post like its a chat room, and seam to have no in depth
boating expertise, sorry but its true.
I don't stay on the list to read BS. I stay here to keep in touch with real
boaters who are BOATERS. WHO ARE BOATING.
I don't care if you own a ski boat, or a hatteras. A boater is a boater. I
don't care how long you've been boating, we learn from our mistakes and from the
experiences of others. I don't can if your old or your, etc, etc. Just loose
the BS.
I love the list. But if you want to know about an LCD TV, GO ELSEWHERE with
your questions and your expertise.
Sorry, but only just somewhat, to be in your face with this. And another
thing... I don't mind seeing posts on subjects that were beat to death a year or
two ago. There are new people on the list, and most of the over discussed
subjects and IMPORTANT. And a few people still have different views.
Simply put if you want to "CHAT" Computers, or TV's, or your favorite food,
you might want to post elsewhere.
Peace to the Boater.

By all means, folks, write about anything remotely related to boating, BUT
PROVIDE AN INFORMATIVE SUBJECT LINE!!!
All my T&T email is routed to a separate folder so as not to interfere with
(a thousand pardons here) the more important email. So I can quickly scan
the subject lines and read the 20% I am interested in or which I have
knowledge that I think may be helpful. I do not bother to delete any...I
just leave them there. At 5k a pop, who cares?
DO NOT GET THE DIGEST VERSION
Even when bandwidth constrained, it is no bother to DL the 30 to 50 emails
this lists gets per day. I set my email program to only DL 5k of each
message and it goes VERY quickly. Of course, this does not work for the
digest version, which is an all or nothing proposition...so I don't get the
digest.

I rarely post here but enjoy reading them. "those guys" are here
because it's a list about trawlers. If the subject is relevant, and I
really can't imagine why a post about a TV on a trawler wouldn't be, it's
fair game. We have an LCD TV on our grand banks. If it doesn't tickle
your fancy then delete it and move on. The email advising people to
go elsewhere that don't pass some ridiculous "real" boater test, what
ever that is, is out of line.

I just want to point out a mistake I made with the spacer required on
older Racor 500 filters. I put the spacer on the top of the filter.
This is incorrect, the spacer has to go on first then the filter. This
probably explains why my vacuum gauge hasn't moved at all. Racor told
me I have been bypassing my filter. I hope you haven't made the same
mistake.
Take care

I think the problem is that this time of year no one is cruising. Even
the live aboards are holed up somewhere in Florida, Mexico or the
Bahamas. I did 6500 miles this year but right now I am waxing,
oiling, varnishing. Not very interesting though.
Wait until April and things will heat up.
I subscribe to the GL list, Krogen list and the AGLCA-2007 list and
more of those posts are about cruising. When I need a technical
question answered I come here and benefit from the regular posters
vast knowledge.

I think there is value in the side topics of trawlering too. I just recently got my g/f to start reading these posts. And anything that gets her more interested in the boat is fine with me. What holds her interest are these side topics...the best cookware, moisture control, TVs, Cameras and woohoo Head issues (she even read Peggys book). She is not what you would call an expert in any facet of cruising, navigation, maintenance etc...but is learning and asking. If she and others offer opinions vice fact I don't see it as too big a price to pay to simply delete the ones we don't care about. As my house is my boat, everything here is of potential interest.
