Spring cleaning- outboards

Now that everyone's finished servicing their windlass, attention should be turned to the outboard; for those that are fortunate enough, outboards. Anybody on the list have twin 1's on their dinghy?

Time to think about the outboard's annual servicing, not just the outboard, but its spare parts and tools kit too.

Then there is the dinghy itself that needs a good looking over- all the safety gear present and serviceable? Particularly in Florida, do you have the registration and a whistle onboard, in addition to all of the other mandated equipment?

Those that go offshore or dinghy around passes, got flares, signal mirror and anchor? Spare gas can, that doesn't leak? Extra 2-cycle oil? Paddle or oars that are functional? Maybe a fender or two? Oh, and I know someone is just chomping at the bit to suggest a portable VHF and depth sounder.

Go ahead you folks, additions to the list are encouraged.

Spring cleaning? I serviced my dinghy outboard in the fall before layup. As
to fenders on a dinghy . . .? Hmmm.

Rudy, get a hold of yourself. Are you feeling well today? Do you realize
what you just said: VHF and depth sounder. Rich, you'd better go check on
Rudy. I think something is wrong.  :-)

Yes!  A week or so ago I did service the windlass.  This week I finally
resolved a problem with the 2hp dinghy motor that had been annoying me
for quite a while - found and removed a small piece of plastic that from
time to time would obstruct the place where fuel enters the carb.  24
years old, and runs like a top!  Changed the gear lube too.

And let me put in a plug for a real set of oars (6.5 foot Sawyers)
rather than the undersized two-piecers that Avon supplied with the
Redcrest.  They sure make rowing more fun and efficient.

Now I 'm working on the 9.9hp kicker - spark plugs, impeller, new
control cables......

I couldn't agree more. A great set of rowing oars are really fairly simple to make, all you need is a plane and some way of cutting along lines drawn on the wood. A few clamps, wood and some glue, along with several pleasent hours working them down.

If anyone is interested, they can find dimensions for a great set of oars in Skiffs and Schooners, authored by Pete Culler, or, get in touch with me and I'll see if I can't get them to you.
