Hi All,
I thought I could remember that the IL river is the longest part of the
where gas is scarse scarce. IS what stated here true??

I would really hate to carry extra fuel with me.  I have a 19'montauk,
60 gal tank.
Thanks,

Matt ...

Matt,

No, it is on the Mississippi below Cairo, down to New Orleans. Don't go there!

Instead, you will want to take the Tenn-Tom route thru Mobile. Much better route.

For future, assuming you are doing the loop ccw, when you are ready to enter Georgian Bay, e-mail me and I can give you some tips on the North Channel.  Been there, done that.

Also, might be of help on the Le Cheneux, Mac Island, Door County (WI) and down Lake Michigan thru Chicago, down to Joliet, with some points of interest.

Just another resource.

Many others can do the same, but if I can help out, gimme a shout.

Phil, Matt,
I have done the Miss all the way from Cairo to New Orleans, and beyond for
that matter.

The Miss from Baton Rouge , La. to N. O. and the Gulf is not good for
pleasure boats. But, do recall that until the Tenn.-Tom was built that was
the ONLY way!!!!!( And it has not been that many yrs..)

From Cairo to the Atchafalaya river in La. is a nice trip. See my web page

for the particulars.

Turn into the Atchafalaya and you have a whole new set of rivers at your
disposal. Very scenic and void of a lot of boats that annoy!!!!! Again see
the articles of our trips on these rivers on the web site.

Yes, the Tenn.-Tom is more built up and all that goes with it. If you want
nature take the Miss to the Atchaf.

There is also the huge Atchafalaya Swamp Basin, not to be missed. Oh, be
ready to take care of yourself- no curtsy marinas, in fact none!!!!!!!!

Just my experience. Anyone wishing to do the trip let me know. Look it up on
actvecaptain.com

While headed down the Miss turn west into the Muskogee ,Oklahoma. We went
all the way to Tulsa but the last leg of that is like the Miss from Baton
Rouge to N.O.

In addition to the Mississippi to New Orleans (which almost nobody takes),
the TennTom has LONG stretches with no access to gasoline or diesel as well.
This is especially true on the last section to Mobile.

Matt, get your paddle out as it is all down stream.  Just steer a middle
course, and you'll be at the Mississippi in a couple of weeks, maybe a
month.

Matt, Phil is truly a wonderful guy, but he is a bit senile and I really
wouldn't listen to him anymore....the Mississippi River route is the best
part of the whole loop.........although only I will admit it, because I am
one of a small handful that went that way.

Senile! Senile, you say! Do I know you? Have we ever met??

Hey listen, senility is great! I bought 3 VHS's 10 years ago, and I get to watch a new movie every night!

Seriously, maybe there's a reason it's a very small handful, ya think? It is a long stretch of river with few resupply points and few places to spend the night. Then you get to the Big Easy and have to navigate all those tight channels and commercial traffic, most loopers just bypass it for Mobile and wind up that much closer to Florida.

Tommy, I don't know your exact route out to the Gulf, but judging by the time I spent on workboats down there, the trip would have scared the hell out of me at times.

So, Matt, it would be an interesting and challenging trip, real river life, but peace and tranquility NOT.

I've said this before....the lower Mississippi was, we think, the greatest leg
of the entire loop, not as scenic perhaps as the North Channel but the
wildlife was truly awesome!  It is three miles wide many places and the
rushing current was going the same direction.  When we were tired, we would
just pull out of the channel, drop anchor and open a bottle of wine.  Never
once did we have an anchor drag, but we did manage to get one hooked on
something....sure was happy to have that ol' hacksaw.  We came straight into
N.O., stopping at a commercial fuel dock to replenish.  They said they had
been following our adventure, including our "run in" with the Mississippi
Queen (that's another story!) and although they didn't sell to pleasure boats,
they were honored to have us at their dock.
