Transducer - Shoot Thru Hull Type

I read this post with interest.  As a cheap and easy
depth gauge, I purchased a low end Garmin fish finder
(model 160 I think) that came with a plastic transom
mount transducer.

I tried to make it work "thru the hull" of my 1983
Grand Banks (42).  I tried the trick suggested to use
the wax of a toilet ring as a temporary mount to the
inside of the hull.  It did not work at all.....

I am going to spend the money (approximately
$120-$150) and buy a bronze thru hull transducer.  Add
many more hundred to haul the boat and drill another
hole in the bottom to mount it....

I will try the bronze transducer from inside before
hauling the boat.

Does anyone think the bronze thru hull will work from
inside where the plastic transom mount transducer did
not?
