REPLY: As a rule, we don't plan to head out in fog on purpose, though I
must admit we have done so on a variety of occasions. However, there have
been times on Lake Superior when a fog bank descended on us very quickly
and suddenly we could not see beyond the bow of the boat. It is VERY
disorienting. I have witnessed 700 foot ships go aground in the Duluth
harbor in fog. Though they had radar, GPS, and the best of commercial
electronics, fog is very disorienting. In the situation, above, the pilot
misinterpreted a side channel marker on his radar as the mid-channel
fairway buoy. In steering to the left of the buoy, thinking it was the
mid-channel marker, he ran hard aground and it took a fleet of tugboats
several days to pull him loose. Fog is disorienting. Radar is helpful,
but this professional pilot nevertheless ran his ship aground even with
radar.
