The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC) is pleased to offer the following free program and walks of interest to birders:
Spring bird identification class.
Spring bird migration is well underway. As a result, our backyards, woods, wetlands and meadows are bursting with birds in full breeding plumage that are either staking out their summer territories or passing through to their northern summer ranges. Expert birder and teacher, Luc Fazio will help birders of all levels learn how to better observe and identify these birds, with a special emphasis on spring migratory and summer resident species.
Join Luc on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at MacEwan Field Station in Riverwood from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Luc's video presentation will give you a glimpse into the lives of spring and nesting (summer) birds in our neighbourhood. Featured species include warblers, vireos, flycatchers, thrushes, wrens, orioles, sparrows, grosbeaks, buntings and many others. Special attention will be given to the songs and calls of these birds.
The program is free; however, space is limited so please pre-register by emailing Discovery@TheRiverwoodConservancy.org or by calling 905-279-5878 to reserve your spot.
Bird Watching Hikes
Join expert birders Luc Fazio and Dan Salisbury for a series of bird watching hikes at Riverwood. Bring your binoculars and discover our magnificent spring migratory birds. Between January and June 2009, over 130 species of birds were identified on the 150-acre Riverwood property and evidence of breeding was found for over 53 species. These walks are great for families, new birders and experienced ones alike! Meet at the main (first) parking lot at Riverwood.
Mondays, 2:30 to 4:00 pm: April 26, May 3, 10 & 31, June 7
Wednesdays, 2:30 to 4:00 pm: April 28, May 5, 12, 19 & 26, June 2 & 9
All bird watching hikes are free; registration is not required. Walks are on regularly used trails; however, the terrain may be steep and some surfaces will be uneven. Check our website for cancellations by midday the previous day. Walks will generally take place whatever the weather although they may be cancelled without notice or shortened due to heavy precipitation or unsafe weather conditions.
TRC is a volunteer-based charity that provides the community with programs in stewardship, gardening, education and volunteer opportunities at Riverwood. Riverwood is located north of the intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road West and The Credit Woodlands on the banks of the Credit River just a few kilometres west of Square One and the City Centre. A map and driving instructions are available on TRC's website at http://www.theriverwoodconservancy.org/Contacts_map_and_directions.html.
