We have been using the Verizon Air card for around three years. 1x (high
speed) works in most places. On a recent trip up the Mobile and Tenn-Tom to
the TN River, we did not have coverage from north of Mobile until close to
Florence, AL. However the card did work in the RT network mode at a 14.4kbps
speed. This was not included in our unlimited usage plan because we were in
whatbs called an Extended Network (not Verizon coverage area). Its .25cents
a min using the card in that mode.
I agree! It was great to mostly check the gage levels and weather during
the 16 inches of rain we got in South Alabama while stuck! Another story about
going north up the Tenn-Tom in spring.

14.4 is free if you use your cell phone, a USB cord, and software. You can
buy that kit from Verizon or piece it together online. During Peak Time it
counts against your minutes and Off-Peak is free. Same for National Access.
If you need continuous access, then MAYBE the card is worth it. If you are
in major metro areas with EVDO or EDGE technology deployed, a card's extra
speed with benefit you. Otherwise, you are wasting $80 a month.
