TWL: Albin fuel dip tubes

I had a fuel problem on Endurance today when one of my Ford Lehmans
stopped running after a few coughs.  The engine would start and then die
immediately.  I knew I was down to about 50 gallons in both tanks but
intended to refill after my CG Aux Safety Patrol.  We limped back to the
marina on one engine and checked out the engine.  I was sucking air !
My fuel dip tube ended at the 50 gallon level on the port tank. The
stbd. tank had 50 gallons and the engine ran fine.  One of my crew
suggested that my fuel line was probably attached to my genset dip tube
which ended 2/3 of the way down so that the genset would never run the
tank dry.  We will use a manometer to check out the lengths of the two
dip tubes.  Has any listee ever experienced a similar problem?

Carroll

Both the port and stbd tanks on my Albin 43 feed from bottom fittings
instead of dip tubes.

Dan,
Carroll said his Albin was a 79 model. What year is yours?

Carroll:

My problem was not exactly the same - but I did find, at a bad time,
that one of my level checking dip sticks was longer than the others and
longer than the dip tube in the same tank.  I shortened the dip stick to
avoid future mis-reads of available fuel.  Why would anyone think to
check such invisible things before a problem arises?
