colors for the hull?

Mine is white, but personally, I like the deep dark blue with a small red
stripe characteristic of the Hinckley's.

Do all of you have white boats? Can my new boat have a different color on
the hull and still be beautiful and sexy as a yacht should be?  Let me hear
your thoughts and experances, what have you seen around your marina?

I too really like the dark hull with light color above the cap rail.  Dark
blue or green with white is a favorite.  A neighbor used 'Seattle Gray'
(very light gray) hull with white cabin on his GB-50, 'Pacific Pearl'.
Very pretty and suitably sexy.

SEASTAR is all white hull and cabin, with clear LPU on the teak for dark
offset.  Problem is my surplus aircraft LPU supplier only sells white and
clear now, so I'm thinking some dark blue window screens would look nice...
:)

John:
We have a 49 Defever PH (1981 vintage) and when purchased it had the traditional
white hull and cabin with baby blue boat deck and pilot house roof.  We had the
hull painted a dark "Midnight Blue" (a Sterling product). We left the cabin
white and and painted the boat deck and pilot house roof  white and painted the
boot strip white.  We did the bottom in black.  All the canvas is done in a dark
navy blue with dark blue screening.  We really like the way it all came out and
constantly get comments from folks on how much they like the color.  We've met a
lot of great people because of the color - they just come up and start talking.
Some of the cons to a dark hull - water spots when washed with hard water
(overcame this problem with a small portable water softener),  shows the salt
spray when it dries on the hull so you get to wash the boat more often, small
scratches are a lot more visible, the Sterling is a two part linear polyurethane
and Sterling doesn't sell it in anything less than a pint at  about $60.00 per
part,  the paint is very difficult to work with when doing touch-up.
All of the cons wouldn't stop me from doing it over again - we really like the
looks of the boat.
I have a computer file (.jpg format) of the boat that I could send via e-mail if
you have a program that will open it - let me know.

Some time ago I was involved with a small brokerage. Heard many times
when prospective buyers looked a a coloured boat: " We can always
paint it blue or red" (something other than what it was then). Never
heard that comment over white boats. Moral: Coloured boats may be
prettier, but white ones are easier to sell.  My 2 cents worth...

George on Scaramouche (white with thin green stripe)  :-)

In the warmer climates, dark colors will cause the vessel to be hotter below
decks, which may increase your AC load, as well as affect your comfort level.
In addition, small dings and scuffs will tend to show more on dark colors than
on white.  If you get your dark color by painting, then you are doomed to
painting for the remainder of your life.
