The shape and construction of a Max prop tends to catch and hold small
lines, especially monofilament, which can lodge between the pivoting blades
and the hub. Less of a problem when they are located behind a keel in a
sailboat than when they are out in the free water to the side like a wing
engine.
The Martec folding props can fail to open a blade and are worthless when
they fail requiring a trip over the side. The geared folders like the Gori
and similar ones make sure both blades open at the same time and amount. A
better mousetrap, IMO.
As always YMMV....

Agreed the geared folding props are superior.
Martec makes a geared 2 blade folding prop. Standard
pivot pins are too small and tend to bend and need to
be upsized IMO.
Both Gori and Flex-O-Fold offer folding 3 blade,
geared versions with claims for better efficiency
over 2 bladed versions.

Bill

The max prop is a geared prop the most pronounced difference ,in the gearing
is that the max prop's gearing is enclosed in the hub and the gori is
external. The only way for a max prop to have a blade that does not open at
the same time and amount would have to be a gear failure. I do agree that
the max prop, in light of the way it feathers would be more susceptible to
fouling.

I used to own a Max-Prop and it was very good, especially in reverse.
However, it feathers like an airplane prop in that its diameter never
changes. Martec and Gori are folding props and, therefore, less likely to
foul. Probably, a three-bladed Max-Prop is more efficient than its
competitors, but is not suited to the task of backup power - that task is
best served by a folding prop.
