City seeks two artists for Seattle City Light service centers
Artists commissioned for site-specific installations
SEATTLE- The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairshttp://www.seattle.gov/arts, in partnership with Seattle City Light, seeks two artists to create semi-permanent, site-specific installations for City Light's North and South Service Centers, hubs for City Light's work. Each artist will create up to two artworks. The artworks should capture the "electricity" of City Light's activities.
The artworks will enhance up to two walls in each of the service center's auditoriums where City Light employees gather for meetings and training. The artworks may be two- or three-dimensional but must hang on the auditorium walls.
A panel of arts professionals will review the applications and select five finalists, who will each receive $750 to create proposals. The panel will select two artists, who will each receive $23,500 to create the installations. The call is open to artists residing in Washington, Oregon, Alaska and British Columbia.
Application deadline is 11 p.m., Monday, Oct. 17 (Pacific Daylight Time). Visit the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs website at www.seattle.gov/artshttp://www.seattle.gov/arts for more information and a link to the online application.
The semi-permanent commissions will be part of City Light's Portable Works Collection. The collection is exhibited throughout the utility's offices, engaging both employees and the public by helping to create an interesting and diverse work environment.
More than 400 City Light employees - from line workers, to meter readers, to electric service representatives and the teams that support them - are located at City Light's service centers. The service centers house the large fleet of vehicles, along with the necessary materials and supplies to prepare crews for fieldwork. During major outage emergencies, the service centers are the lifeline to City Light's nearly 400,000 customers. The centers also provide customer service, including bill-paying.
The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs promotes the value of arts and culture in communities throughout Seattle. The 16-member Seattle Arts Commission, citizen volunteers appointed by the mayor and City Council, supports the city agency.
