Highlights of reports received March 20 through March 27
from the Niagara Frontier Region include GR. WHITE-FR.
GEESE, SANDHILL CRANE and GREAT EGRET.
March 22 in the Iroquois Refuge, 6 GR. WHITE-FR. GEESE on
Casey Road at Route 63. Elsewhere in the refuge and areas -
SANDHILL CRANE at the Feeder Canal and Ditch Road, RED-
SHOULDERED HAWK hunting on Knowlesville Road, and NORTHERN
SHRIKES at Casey Road and Sour Springs Road.
At least 26 waterfowl species were reported this week. SNOW
GOOSE maximums were in flight - 265 over Medina and 200 over
the Batavia Waste Water Plant. First report of BLUE-WINGED
TEAL from Stockton in Chautauqua County. CACKLING GEESE at
both Beaver Island and Buckhorn Island State Parks on Grand
Island, and a single CACKLING GOOSE among 18 waterfowl
species at Wilson Harbor on Lake Ontario.
Also at Beaver Island State Park, 80 GREAT BLACK-B. GULLS
and several GLAUCOUS GULLS and ICELAND GULLS. March 26, a
SHORT-EARED OWL over the park golf course.
First report of GREAT EGRET, March 25 on Grand Island's West
River Parkway.
March 22, SNOWY OWL still on Jennings Road in North Collins.
Other reports this week - at Dunkirk Harbor, PEREGRINE
FALCON at the power plant chimneys, and TURKEY VULTURES
feeding on fish and waterfowl littered on the ice. Five
LITTLE GULLS on the lower Niagara River at Lewiston, and
only 5 BONAPARTE'S GULLS reported on the upper river.
AMERICAN WOODCOCKS showing themselves in Clarence and the
Allegany County Town of Almond. Unreported for months -
three PURPLE FINCHES in Clarence and one in Lancaster. And,
several reports of KILLDEER, NORTHERN FLICKER and BROWN-
HEADED COWBIRDS, plus an influx SONG SPARROWS.
