Mike,
CaribouMike55@aol.com,
In November you asked:
(You don't accept e-mail from me a message says...spam blocker maybe)
"...While I'm in this puzzled mood, let's go to antifreeze. Each manufacturer
of
engines has his own brand of antifreeze, and dire warnings if you dare
deviate. Well, let's examine this a little. Is the cast iron in a Detroit,
Cat,
Cummins , etc., so vastly different from each other, that a special brand of
antifreeze is required? Is the heat generated by these engines a different
brand of
heat, needing different handling? How special are the heat exchangers and
water pumps?
Here is some info that may help.
Last fall I did a lot of research centered on antifreeze for Detroit
Diesels...Took me about four days full time.....You can find about ten of my posts on
T & T under Detroit Diesel Antifreeze...as I discovered important information.
I came across specs for other engines and I remember that for Cat diesels, as
an example, certain seals including I think water pump seals were severely
damaged by certain antifreeze formulations. As another example, some DD have wet
liners which require an anticavitation ingredient...without this additive
liner pitting and deterioriation occurs...fortunately my 8V71T's do not have wet
liners, I believe the 53 series engine DO.
I never realized how important antifreeze specs are for different engines. I
drained the old automotive antifreeze for some approved by DD and replaced it
with an approved coolant....all discussed in T&T posts from me,
hope this helps,
Happy holidays,
