Dear list.

A member pointed me to the email signup web page

It takes about 45-60 days for the certificate to get to me while I am here cruising in the eastern med so I have to process my renewal manually.

I was hoping someone on the list has already done that and can tell me the steps I need to take.

I need to renew mine and wonder how one goes about it now? Do I pay first and then submit? Do I submit and then pay?

The exact process I would like to know because calling them from here is hard and $$$

Lee,

I tried to register to renew my USCG Certificate of Documentation on the
CG website but continued to be rejected because their program wouldn't
accept the entries I had input.

I contacted the USCG Documentation center in Falling Waters, WV (NVDC at
(800) 799-8362) for assistance and after a bit of discussion, was told
that instead of registering on the CG website, I could just go to
pay.gov and use a brand new option pay for my renewal there.

I just did that and it was easy.  They accept credit cards and gave me
the option of having the certificate sent via USPS or e-mail and I think
one other.  I chose the USPS option.

Interestingly, my documentation doesn't expire until July 31, yet there
was no problem giving them my money now!  We'll see how soon I receive
the new certificate.

I'm new to the trawler life. The company handling my documentation, Saxton in Ft Lauderdale filed for my initial registration on Dec 6th 2014. When I hadn't received it prior to my departure at the end of Feb I called Saxton to check on the status. They said that as of Feb 27th they were just processing applications that had arrived on Oct 14th 2014. I'm not sure if any of this affects renewals but it appears the Coast Guard is very short on help!

Tom,

Some comments. I did my own document submission to register LeeZe when
having her constructed in Europe. I even had to figure out how to get the
NVDC to issue me an HIN as the one the yard was putting on did not comply
with the USCG rules.
I did it all myself. No service.
I hope you are not paying an arm and a leg for getting this done because
the system is designed for do-it-yourselfers.

Be that as it may, you will probably hear that it can take as much as a
year to get your new doc. Yup, it took me 1.5 years to get mine, and that
was 2011.

But that did not stop me from cruising. I kept a copy of the doc's
submitted and used them to cruise Turkey, Northern Cyprus and the smallish
Greek islands between.

But the NVDC will say that without a valid COD, one cannot cruise (as least
they said that when I talked with them back in 2011). If there was a COD
for the vessel under the previous owner and the paperwork was filled out
and you have a copy, I would cruise and just explain your situation to any
police guy or gal that stops you.

Have fun

Lee,
Thanks and yes I'm cruising away! I had to import the boat from Canada so I used the documentation service. It wasn't costly and probably saved me a little time. Since I'm in Florida
I had to have the boat registered so that was sufficient for local law enforcement, I think had I wanted to take the boat out of the country I would have had a little more concern. I was boarded by the USCG in Tampa and all went well. I didn't realize this could take over a year. I guess in government work that's fast!
Enjoying the Cruising life!!

Tom,

THANK YOU for this!

I just filled out the forms and after some screwing around, was able to get their system to accept my military address and foreign phone #.

This is just too easy now…… I wonder what the catch is.

As for email, how does one get around when the authorities want to see the original?

I suspect that if you're printing from a digital file, that could be of
identical quality as the original??
