BUY, SELL AND TRADE TRAWLERS AND TRAWLERING GEAR
View all threadsAs you are probably aware I provided a free Local Notice to Mariners app
about a month ago. Today I announce another free app that will display
the USCG light lists of which there are 7 volumes, for the Coast Guard
districts numbered from 1-17.
Looking up items in the paper copies of the light lists or even finding
the items in the PDF files is a bit of a pain. The paper books won't lie
flat and are difficult to read in the dark.
The PDF requires a computer, tablet or phone. The latter two have small
screens and the print is really tiny unless you zoom in on the page.
So, this new app requires you to download the data from the USCG web
site, but requires only pushing a couple of buttons. Once you have the
data it will display the items one at a time, say 5-20 items per screen
and the screen can be fast scrolled. Even with 2000-5000 items per
volume you can scroll around in a couple of seconds.
Selecting a line item with a short click displays all the data for the
light list item,, gives you time to read it and then the pop up
disappears. A long click brings up the same information, in addition the
built in text to speech engine, reads the contents you so you don't have to.
Each line item has a visual icon representing the item. For instance a
green buoy picture, etc.
The present app is in beta but supports all 7 volumes (48,000 items) and
is actually useful even at this stage. It is not crippled and there are
no ads!
This is just the beginning of a set of functionality that will
eventually support GPS, flashing lights, and other features.
The Coast Guard does not warrant the underlying data, but my study of
that, does not show any flaws that would preclude using it with caution.
After all we haven't been using the light lists anyway, have we? Right.
I don't think the BST forum will allow a URL link in normal format, so I
inserted some extra spaces which you will have to remove.
Here is the link to the beta program at google play.

If you have a problem with the link, send me an email directly. I can
respond with the link or send you the app directly.
It has been tested with Android 2.2.3 to 6.0.1 on a Motorola Droid and
several phones and tablets.
It does not slice bread. And only requires to be online during
downloading. Otherwise you use it offline without an internet connection.
