Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsSo here's the thing. Instead of buying your next cruising guide, try
ActiveCaptain for free. And if you get data from it, add reviews for
the marinas and anchorages that you stay at.
Take the money you save and get better internet connectivity on your
boat. Use an aircard and you'll have a continuous internet connection
throughout the Hudson River as well as the other rivers and coastlines
in the US. You'll get much better use out of that than having a shiny
new guidebook. You'll have your email, weather, and the entire
internet at your fingertips, even while moving through the water.
The internet has the ability to shift the power of purchasing to the
consumer. But you have to use the tools in order for it to work.
Consider that as you start your cruising over this new season...

I have to completely agree with Jeff on this philosophy and understanding of
the utility of the Internet. Think about it....the Internet is all about
INFORMATION DISCOVERY. ActiveCaptain is paving the way for boaters to couple
Internet information discovery with having almost real time and
instantaneous information about the places you want, be it anchorages or
marinas. All the ActiveCaptain mark comments show you date the comment was
left, so you can evaluate the age of the information yourself.
The trick is you have to obtain the tools to provide you with mobile
connectivity for this to work for cruisers and liveaboards. But even if you
dont have mobile connectivity, ActiveCaptain is very useful as a desktop
planning tool prior to the trip.
(In the interest of full disclosure, I do have a bias in this discussion. I
worked for 10 years to bring mobile connectivity to
aircraft....http://www.AirborneInternet.com . Therefore I am a natural
advocate of this capability.)
