Well, my research shows that you can expect 1,000 cycles or more from
an AGM battery, and only about 300-350 from a flooded cell battery. How
many cycles can you get from your flooded cell? Lifeline AGM Batteries,
made by Concorde, advertises 255 amp-hours and over 1,000 cycles, all while
providing 1,350 CCA and a whopping 801 reserve minutes. If you got a
flooded cell that will do all that for $200, please let me know ASAP and
thanx! in advance.

Myles,
Where are you buying 8D AGM's for $200? West shows them in their catalog
for $449. I know West can be high, but not that far off. Also, the 801
reserve minutes is listed as a 15 amp not the 25 amp of a flooded 8D.

PS. someone asked what AGM means - Absorbed Glass Mat (the positive and
negative plates are sandwiched in a tight packing of 90% saturated glass
mat material).

Stan and Robin,
Where did I say that AGM cost $200.00? The only thing I can think of
was my reply to Dick B. in which I asked a question with a statement(does
that make sense?), saying that if he can find $200 flooded that will do the
same as an AGM, then let me know where. As a matter of fact, just hours
before that post, I emailed in excepts from the West catalog stating that
AGM batteries were $450. I will resend if you like.
It is true that the AGMs are 15 amp, but most 25 amp flooded are
designed as starting batteries, which means low cycles, not good. Even in
the West catalog, their 8D Deep-cycle flooded, which has more cycles than a
standard cycle flooded, has only 350 cycles. That is pretty good for
flooded, but the AGM has over 1,000 cycles! The AGMs are also 1,350 cold
cranking amps, 150 CCA more than the flooded. So even at the 15 amp rating,
AGM provides more starting power and provides it for a longer time.
Having said all this about AGM, I probably will only have one AGM 8D on
hand for reserve and follow Capt. Al's advice about the Diehards. The AGMs
only have a full 12 month warranty, and lugging 8Ds around will be no
picnic!
Thanx Capt. Al!!!

Sorry Myles, your question statement threw me and I thought you were
comparing dollars as in $200 flooded vs AGM's for $200. I stand corrected.
I only compare AH as I have no need for CCA's or MCA's or Res. Min.; my
Detroit has hydraulic start. I am putting together 8 - T105's for my
house batteries (1,000 AH of 12 volt for about $500). West states that the
T-105's are capable of 700 complete discharge / charge cycles. There is
an outlet south of Seattle that sells them for $63.

I am not that familiar with AGM batteries. Can you tell me your source for the
AGM data?. Trojan advertises 700+ cycles for their 6v batts, and I have seen in
varioue boating magazines etc, that gel cells will get about 4-500 cycles at
most> Wish there was one source that would give Proper Data.
