I need a new windlass. Does anyone have any experience with either the Powerwinch Freefall or the Quick Genius Windlasses? How do they stack up against the Lewmar Pro-Fish? I'm assume these are all presently made offshore. Ease of installation, quality of manufacture, etc?

Gary replies:

Disclaimer, no connection beyond satisfied customer.

I have had a Quick Genius 1000 on my PDQ 34 for six years, with a
combination chain and line rode.  It is a horizontal shaft windlass
rated at 1000 # pull with power down and a corded remote.  Other than
the time The Admiral stomped on the lever on top that presses the line
into the gypsy, locking it in there so hard that it broke the stripper
plate (replacement was $6.00 I think) it has worked flawlessly.  They
are made in a very modern new factory in Italy -- see the Bill P. and
Steve DeA.'s article about their 'business trip' to Italy  in
Passagemaker several months back. They were quite impressed and pictured
the 100% test facility.  Google "Quick windlass" for pages of sales
offerings in both vertical and horizontal windlasses.  They were at the
time I bought the part distributed by Plastimo, who no longer lists any
windlasses on the US or European websites.  From the proliferation of
sales offerings you will find on the Google search, it appears that
Quick is distributing them directly to retailers.

Clearly, I would not hesitate to recommend the Quick line.  I have no
information about the Lewmar unit.
