No kidding Luke. Several people in the northeast had already changed their holiday weekend plans, including booking flights to Block Island. How the reporter (a very active/serious birder himself) didn't have any foresight on this, I have no idea. It's a real shame. I wish people would stop with the fake bird reports on April Fools...unless it's something that's actually FAR-FETCHED. It isn't even funny, unless your sense of humor is really really pathetic/lame. I also agree, ok maybe a Dodo or even a Great Auk would get a little chuckle but a real but very rare possibility like a Northern Lapwing is going to far! What I found really interesting was Rachel Farrel's take. She seemed to think that Jeremiah was silly for jumping the gun and posting to Massbird. I would have posted to every site if I hadn't been beaten to it. I was beside myself with excitement. Ironic that Mark Barriger posted it on CTBirds? I was tempted to email him about how pathetic it was to make up a report (imagine how foolish that person made you feel, etc.) - didn't have the heart. I am about to go apeshit on RI. I applaud your guts on calling them out, Nick. I am afraid to offend, but I am not sure what I would lose out on if I called the assholes assholes. Am I an "asshole-birder enabler" with my silence. Listen to yourselves - based on a report of " No real specific's but hopefully something soon " people have canceled plans, sent harassing emails, and are " threatening to go apeshit on RI " . is there really anyone out there who hasn't played a practical joke that backfired ? So what if this was silly, lame, whatever . it's the 1st of april - april fool's day - and if you let the thought of seeing this bird override what common sense you do have then in my opinion you're to blame as much as the original sender of the email . and even if you did already go to rhode island I'm sure they could use some help with the cleanup . we open our wallets with millions for Haiti ; how much will we send to our neighbors next door ? Well, now I really pity society if people are cancelling trips to the Galapagos to run off on a whim to see ONE BIRD! Rarity or not, what HAS happened to common sense? Since when has this pasttime become so obsessed over ticking off lists instead of simply enjoying the fact that we have unusual sightings in and around the area and some interesting diversity? Why don't people run so quickly to help others in need? Why don't folks run to help save our natural diversity? Are ticks on lists all this group cares about? I'm terribly confused. Please... can't we move on from this topic? If we can't discuss hot and more pertinent topics that truly deal with birds - like saving natural habitats so we can go enjoy seeing birds in the future or engaging in 'safe birding' in hunting areas... then this one really needs to stop. It's gotten out of control with nastiness that I'm now ready to leave it. People PLEASE stop.
