Yes, Mark, expediency is an important factor.  Ebird is great for preserving the records of the Nuthatch & Brambling;  this list is great for getting confirmation and alerting our colleagues to the Brambling.

A great additional feature of ebird would be regional notification of reports of rare birds.

But the best is having the bird clearly in view.

Good birding!

There can also be scientific and personal goals.  We can be good scientists by using ebird;  we can be good friends through this CT list. It's not hard to do both.

Check http://ebird.org/ebird/alerts and see the section "Rare Bird Alerts - Email alerts for rare birds in a particular area."

I am subscribed to get rare bird alerts from eBird for CT on an hourly (more or less) basis.  The definition of what is rare varies by the date; I believe a suitably knowledgeable CT birder defines the species and date ranges that qualify for alerts, possibly by county.  (I did not see such a notice for the Northern Shrike, but I might have deleted it by mistake.  Also it is possible to tell eBird not to send your sightings out on such alerts so it might have been never been sent.)

This is not about preserving the record, it is about seeing the bird. The listserv is fine as long as you are willing to gamble on the bird staying till you check your inbox. Phone calls are still better.

Ebird has some value.  Just  not in getting people to see a bird in a timely manner.

I didn't know that Roy, That would be a great feature if the alerts
were timely by the one who is reporting the rare birds. But not sure
how impressive that will be if the person who spotted the rare bird at
8:00 am in the morning on the way to work didn't record it on ebird
until after supper that night after the kids were tucked in. The
CTBirds Listserv is still the undisputed champ for alerting everyone
in a timely manner for birds seen in our small State.

Keep up the great work Roy!!
