Verison air card and email

Pat and will begin the loop this fall, and part of our prep is getting email set up.  I have two questions for those of you who are using the Verison PC Card:

  1. Which plan do you use, the Unlimited Broadband Access Plan, or the Unlimited National Access Plan?  It appears that the Unlimited Broadband gives the fastest downloads etc, much faster than the National Access Plan, and the literature I have doesn't give a very good explanation as to why I should choose one over the other.

  2. Do you have any thoughts as to which of the free email providers is best (Yahoo, GMail, etc)?  I am using Comcast now, but when I drop their high speed internet service I will lose their email service

re: 1

Broadband speeds are much higher.  If we go to Madison, WI (they have Broadband Access) with the laptop we get +600kps speeds, compared to ~130kps speeds on NA.

re: 2

I have used Yahoo to host my domain name and business e-mail for the last 7 years and have been very happy.  I always like the fact that if I can find a computer with Internet access, then I can see my e-mail.  No Outlook/Outlook Express ect.

I am not sure what you are being offered locally, but in the major
metros the cost of the two services is the same. You might be able to
get a National Access (aka 1xRTT) card for  a cheaper price. The
Broadband (aka EVDO) card will default to Nat'l Access, so it makes
much more sense to go the Broadband route. If you can get an EVDO
signal, the speed difference is dramatic. The two services have very
different coverage maps. Verizon is rapidly building the broadband
network out to cities, but don't look for it anytime soon in sparsely
populated or trafficed locales. You must check the coverage maps,
remember the data systems do not have the same "coverage" profile as
Verizon's voice network.

Currently, Cingular's mid speed "EDGE" network has the best overall
coverage on the specific waterways involved in the Great Loop. I
emphasize this, because what happens on the water is different than the
coverage in town on or on the Interstate. This network, only nominally
faster than 1xRTT is fine for e-mail and most browsing, will  not give
a very enjoyable streaming video experience. Cingular is rolling out
their broadband (HSDPA) network in major cities, but as of now, Verizon
has a big lead in areas covered by braodband.

Disclaimer: my company sells Cingular-based services to  here in Texas.
