All hands--

The Krogen 48 Whaleback and the Nordhavn 46 top the list of 10 best
trawlers in the world as selected by subscribers of Trawler World List, the
interactive email forum that has more than 800 members around the world.

Here are the top 10 trawlers in the poll:

  1. Krogen 48 Whaleback
  2. Nordhavn 46
  3. Willard 40 Pilothouse
  4. Grand Banks 42 Classic
  5. Northern Marine 64 LRC
  6. Krogen 42
  7. Alaskan 48
  8. DeFever 49
  9. Marine Trader 34 Double Cabin
  10. Nordic Tug 32

Robert Beebe's original Passagemaker received honorable mention in the
polling conducted more than a year ago.

The initial poll in early 1999, which permitted multiple choices from
respondents, generated the following report:

<<<
Here are the results of your votes for TWList's Top 10 Trawlers of All
Time, based on posts to the List and email in my mailbox:

#1) Willard--the 30, 36 Vega and 40--has received the most mentions.

#2) Kadey-Krogen--especially the 48 series--also received many mentions.

#3) These two makes are quite a distance ahead of Grand Banks, with the 42
Classic garnering the most votes.

#4) Zopilote and especially Spirit of Zopilote are next, a tribute to the
Bruce Kessler-Steve Seaton collaboration.

#5) Arthur DeFever's designs, Alaskan 48 and DeFever 49, received the next
cluster of votes.

#6 through #8 equal votes) In alphabetical order:

--Marine Trader
--Nordhavn 46, with a special nod to Jim and Susy Sink of Salvation II
--Romsdal

#9 and 11 tied also) In alphabetical order:

--Nordic Tugs
--Passagemaker by Robert Beebe
--Rueben Trane and the Florida Bay Coasters designed by Jay Benford and
Great Harbour 37 designed by Louis Codega.

What an interesting selection! Wouldn't you love to have one of each at
your dock?

Of the above boats, if you could only have a single one, and price were not
a consideration, which one would you chose? Please cast your ballot for
only one boat. If you mention more than one boat, you vote will not be
counted.

When Listees were asked for a single boat each, the result was the top 10
list shown above.

It's being posted now as a prelude to the start of polling for the best
trawlers of 2000.

If you happen to be the owner of one of the top 10 trawlers, and have a JPG
available of your boat, please send it to me by private email for use on
Trawler World Online in a feature on the List's initial top 10 list.

Water is available at marinas in the Bahamas, but you'll pay for it.  Also, it
sometimes tends to taste a bit brackish (as it also does in Florida in some
places).  This is easily overcome however by installing a simple charcoal
filter in your water system like you'd buy in Sears or Home Depot or some such
to mount under your sink.

If this is a one time trip I'd personally be reluctant to invest the money,
space, electrical power and general aggravation of installing a water maker.
If it's to become an annual event, then it makes more sense.

Good luck....

Those of us who live down here do not drink the tap water, although it is
supposed to be drinkable, and lots of Bahamian people drink it. It does not
taste very good. Most buy bottled RO water at about $1.00 per gallon.  We
have a small RO plant under our sink at the condo.
