Saving internet info

This is probably too obvious, but just in case, here is the best way I
have found to save boating information found on internet web pages in my
digital library.

I don't like saving web pages because you get a lot of junk and extra
folders and it becomes hard to find things in the cluttered up folders
especially if it spans a couple of pages. I also wanted a way to get rid
of junk on the page. So here is what I do using two free programs (sorry
its only for a PC)

-Copy the internet page or part of page by marking it and copying to the
clipboard.
-Paste the copied material into LibraOffice word processor. It handles
pictures as well as text.
-Use the word editor to get rid of anything not wanted. You can also add
your own material.
-Use cutepdf  to print to a pdf with an easy to find name.

You could just save in the libraoffice format, but I had some problems
with linked pictures disappearing so prefer the pdf.
Info on multiple web pages can be consolidated by multiple copies and
pastes before the final cutepdf  print step.

Interesting BUT what are the two free programs and how does one get them.

Evernote is a free program (if you want access to data on your smartphone
without a network connection you do have to pay).  It eliminates multiple
steps of copy and paste.  Evernote.com

Not sure how Evernote fits in, since I would not keep a huge library of
articles on my phone. For example the recent pointer to Capt Pauley
added a number of new PDFs to my horde of "ideas for the future"
library. Websites come and go, but my PDF library is for sure avail for
future reference. This suggestion was for people who use a PC as part of
their boat equipment.

Libreoffice is a free office suite equivalent to Microsoft Office. For
this purpose, I used the Word equivalent program.  Cutepdf Writer is a
printer driver that creates a pdf instead of printing a hard copy. You
can download the latest versions at:

http://www.libreoffice.org/

http://www.cutepdf.com/products/

( I just googled the names, no affiliation with either program, just a
user that found them useful, there are other similar programs, these are
just the ones I use and found that they get the job done easily)

BTW the excel equivalent spreadsheet program is really great too. I have
created a spreadsheet with multiple worksheets. All of my boat related
info is now in one place. This includes:

  • Consolidated list of high level boat specific info like ids,
    physical dimensions, capacities
  • cruising and maintenance logs
    - checklists for getting underway, arriving, an extend leaving of
the boat, going back to the boat ...
-todo list of projects and maint activities for the future
including paperwork like renewals, licenses, and registrations. (I have
even found a way to automate a tickler list for periodic chores based on
time or engine hours. This was pretty tricky and used less then I thought)
  • Boat notes for any misc info like part numbers, serial numbers,
    quirky operation/maint info.
  • Bridge notes: abbreviated instructions on using main features of
various equipment, like autopilots, radar, GPS, depth sounders,
intercoms, VHF ... (for me and my less experienced wife if she should
    ever need to do it).
  • spares inventory with locations

I keep an electronic copy current and print a hard copy periodically
that I keep in a binder. It provides backup or a quick look if I don't
want to fire up the computer. I also write on the hard copy and transfer
it later sometimes. If you don't change the spreadsheet much, you only
need to print a couple of changed pages, so not too difficult.

Take a look at " read it later" set of products, all free.  It reformats and stores on the cloud for later reading, right from the web.  Easy one click.
