Greetings Colleagues,
Felix E. Unaeze, Savannah State University (GA), University Librarian, shares the following highlights about the Asa H. Gordon Library:
The Savannah State University Friends of the Library Group (FOTL) officially organized its January 18th meeting held virtually and in-person at Savannah State's Asa H. Gordon Library. Having previously approved group bylaws, the group elected an acting slate of officers and formed working sub committees, including Public Relations, Communications, and Media; Special Events and Community Affairs; Special Collections; and Campus Liaisons. The officers are Pat West, acting chairperson; Dr. Deborah Johnson-Simon, vice chairperson; Professor Sharee Seal, recording secretary; Tina Brown, financial secretary; Dr. Clemontine Washington, parliamentarian.
For its inaugural event, Savannah State University FOTL hosted "Beyond Boundaries of the Weeping Time-A Genealogy of People and Place" on March 6,2023 in the Asa H. Gordon Library Art Gallery. The forum was held as part of the Weeping Time Commemoration. The series of events from March 2-6, reflected on the anniversary of the 1859 sale of 429 enslaved Africans, the largest such sale in United States History.
The afternoon event at Gordon Library featured a panel discussion led by Dr. Kwesi DeGraft Hanson and a video presentation by genealogist Nicka Smith. This event was the first hosted by the SSU FOTL, which plans further events and fund-raising initiatives to support and raise awareness in the community about Savannah State University library services and programming.
