Meet the Makers Co-Directors Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker (III) will be in attendance for but both screenings of the film at The Grand. This is truly a unique opportunity to see the film that Stephen Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter calls a “art espionage thriller, part family memoir, and part timely warning about the dangers of state surveillance.” You’ll also be able to talk in person with the team behind this versatile documentary. ​ Karl Marx City centers on a time twenty-five years after the collapse of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), where Epperlein returns to the proletarian Oz of her childhood to find the truth about her late father's suicide and his rumored Stasi past. She begins to grapple with unanswered questions and as she looks for answers in the Stasi's extensive archives, she pulls back the curtain of her own nostalgia and enters the parallel world of the security state, seeing her former life through the lens of the oppressor.
