Kingston Area Birds 23 December 2023 – 29 December 2023
Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintain records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with ‘Kingston FN’. Alternatively, please email records directly
to me – contact details below. Please note that some sightings may require
review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise. Species in bold type
require completion of a rare bird report available on the KFN website or
directly from me. If indicated, an OBRC report may be required instead (
http://www.ofo.ca/site/Obrcreport). Some iPhone users report that bold type
may be replaced by asterisks.
Overview:
Well we are down to the last full week of 2023. A number of the Christmas
Bird Counts in the area have been completed, which resulted in some great
sightings over the week. There were also some misses for our area, so
let’s get out there over the holidays and make this last week count. Happy
Holidays everyone!

GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE – 1 was seen on Button Bay Road on Dec. 24;
CACKLING GOOSE – 1 bird was found at Centennial Park on Dec. 24; 1 was seen
on County Road 8 on Dec. 27;
TRUMPETER SWAN – 9 were seen on Arrowhead Lane on Dec. 27;
NORTHERN PINTAIL- 1 bird was seen in Cataraqui Bay on Dec. 24; 1 was seen
at the Napanee Cemetery on Dec. 24; 1 was seen in the Napanee River on Dec.
25; 5 birds were seen at the Marshlands on Dec. 29; 1 was seen on Amherst

GREEN-WINGED TEAL – 1 bird was still seen at Belle Park on Dec. 27; 1 was

REDHEAD- *a count of 6000 birds (estimate) came from Prince Edward Point
NWA on Dec. 29;
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER – 1 was seen in Cataraqui Bay on Dec. 24; 2 were seen
at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory on Dec. 26, 8 on Dec. 28, 30 on
Dec. 29; 61 were seen at Point Traverse Woods at Prince Edward Point NWA on
Dec. 26, 2 on Dec. 28; 1 was seen in Cataraqui Bay on Dec. 29; 6 were seen

RUDDY DUCK – 1 was seen in Cataraqui Bay on Dec. 24; 2 were seen in

PIED-BILLED GREBE – 1 was seen off the Wolfe Island Ferry on Dec. 26;
HORNED GREBE – 1 bird was seen at Long Point/Gravelly Bay Road on Dec.

primarily on Wolfe and Amherst Islands.
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK – 1 was seen on Howe Island Ferry Rd. on Dec. 25;
COOPER'S HAWK – multiple sightings in the Kingston Circle this week is nice
to see
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK – 1 was seen on Amherst Island on Dec. 25, 1 on Dec. 27,
2 on Dec. 28, 32 on Dec. 29; 1 was seen on Wolfe Island on Dec. 29;
BELTED KINGFISHER – 1 bird was still seen at Centennial Park in Bath on

COMMON GRACKLE – 9 birds were seen on Long Point Road, PEC on Dec. 24; 1
was seen on the Drive-in Road in Napanee on Dec. 27;
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER – 1 bird was seen at Prince Edward Point NWA on
Dec. 29

Please note that you must be a card-carrying member of Kingston Field
Naturalists (KFN), or be accompanied by a member, to access both the Martin
Edwards Reserve and Amherstview Sewage Lagoons. Permits are being checked
on a regular basis at Amherstview and those without are being evicted. KFN
members wishing to enter the Invista property must enter through the west
gate and show their membership card to security.
