I apologize for a question that's probably been asked a zillion times  before
but the Z3801 that I've had for years (but not in service) won't  lock on to
satellites anymore and I'm looking for any suggestions as to  how to
troubleshoot it.

Has it ever worked in the current location?

When the Z3801A does a survey, it saves the location so that it doesn't heve
to to a survey again after a power cycle.  That won't work after it has moved
until you do another survey.
