• WOW: we had seven (7) boats at the start -- all racing Non-Spinnaker (results and series standings below).
• OUCH: five (5) were DNF; only two boats finished.
  Damage to numerous boats as well. No reports of any injuries to persons.

The wind was uncommonly strong Sunday. NBC's Nonsuch fleet (Sheba and Rivercat) were pleasure sailing in the morning, both reefed, with a steady 18+ kts veering between WNW and N,, morning gusts up to the high 20s. Sheba didn't race yesterday, but The Office, Pentimento, and Merry Chase, all offered eye-witness details of the race:

By the 1:30 p.m PHRF fleet start the wind was N and blowing steadily in the the 20s. A few boats had shortened sail, flying #2 or #3 jibs instead of #1, or reefing their jib or mainsail. The fleet raced Course #2: B-D-C.. On the leeward leg (to D and then to C), the wind kicked up into the 30s, with gusts or microbursts reported at 38 kts and 47 kts.. The wind settled back into the 20s and 30s, but with frayed nerves, frayed sails, and other damage, most boats decided to head back. With the high winds from the north since morning, and the fetch, boats heading back to Shattemuc faced 4-foot waves and wind on the nose the entire ride home. The ride home for Nyack boats was also rocky. Neither the race, nor the ride home, were without incident:

• Spirit's boom broke in two.
• Pentimento has a badly damaged jib.
• Zoom finished but ran into problems on the way home to Ossining. After reaching port, Pentimento went back out and towed Zoom back to Shattemuc
• The Office figures the day definitely took some time off the life of their sails, and had some damage to their mast slides.
• Merry Chase had engine problems on the way in, anchored, and got a tow back to the mooring. Looking for a diver to unwrap a line from the prop.

Here's hoping wind this Wednesday will be a little less, and that most of the fleet will be out again. Note, Ossining fireworks are July 3, Tarrytown July 4, and Nyack and Haverstraw are July 5.
